Food Allergy

Soybean oil is okay?

Lo is allergic to dairy so GI recommended cutting soy from my diet as well.  So then, what's the scoop on soybean oil?  I was just craving some fast food (I know, I know, but geez Louise this diet is HARD and a girl wants some junk food now and then!) so I looked up Taco Bell's allergen menu and they say 'may contain soybean oil which is not considered allergenic.'  Have I been making this harder than it has to be or do you guys avoid soybean oil?  It's literally in EVERYTHING!

Re: Soybean oil is okay?

  • So clearly I posted too soon and have since read some older posts about soybean oil causing reactions.  I have no idea yet since lo is still on Neocate trial (until we get a blood-free diaper - hoping tmrw at pedi's office) and I haven't challenged with breast milk yet.

    Here's hoping!

  • My LO is allergic to soy....our allergist felt that soy lecithin and soy oil would be ok just to avoid soy and soy protein.  However, after giving LO something that was made with soy oil he had a pretty bad reaction.  He can tolerate soy lecithin but not soy oil.  That being said, if you LO is not actually allergic to soy I would think it would be ok.  Apparently soy oil is not as allergic as other types because it is processed so much.  If you are not sure call the GI.  GL

  • Bummer ladies!  I'm hoping once we challenge with breast milk we can start introducing a few things to see what he's actually allergic to.  I agree about not eating out and it being a MAJOR bummer.  We'd love to go out to eat as a family of three, but that's not much fun when you literally can't find a single thing on the menu!  I feel for all of you...and me, too! (And our little ones, of course!)
  • My LO reacts to lethican and flour, but does okay with oil and protein. Unfortunately each child is different.

  • DD has a suspected milk allergy so I eliminated dairy and soy, including soybean oil.  I reintroduced soybean oil after she had clear diapers for a month and she hasn't had a reaction.

I think every kid is different, and it also depends on how well you can tolerate the diet.  I've adjusted fairly well, and adding back in the soybean oil has been great because I can actually eat out now.  GL!
