Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Hummus

Anyone feed their LO hummus yet?  It's a staple for lunch around our house, and I can't really seem to find anything about whether it's okay or not for babies to eat.  I would just use plain/original flavored hummus, nothing spicy.

Re: Hummus

  • Should be fine. Chickpeas aren't an allergen or anything.

  • I forgot to see how little your LO is, but maybe you could mash chick peas as an introduction to hummus? I don't know what the beans will do to your LO's digestion, but if you started with straight-up chick peas, you'd know what ingredient is causing a reaction.

Actually, they can be. They contain a protein which is similar to soy and if you have a soy allergy, you might also be allergic to garbanzo beans.

I haven't given it to DS yet but we eat a lot of it and I'll probably introduce it by the time he is one.

  • I love hummus but the amount of garlic in it makes my guts ache.  Do you think your LO's digestive system is ready for something that strong?  I am pretty sure mine wouldn't be ready for anything like that.

  • My Pedi recommended we wait till 8 months for hummus but it was okay to give regular mashed chickpeas - the concern is store bought contains salt plus the sesame seed allergy concerns.

  • DS loves hummus on middle eastern type bread. I've started branching out- he's had garlic, roasted red pepper, eggplant, etc. Nothing super spicy though, unless you consider the "garlic lovers" hummus spicy. DS doesn't have food allergies though and has really taken to all kinds of solids.
