Pumpkin Pie Safe?

I've been craving pumpkin pie recently...is it safe to eat during pregnancy?  Just checking since it's made with eggs.

Thanks!

Re: Pumpkin Pie Safe?

  • I'm sorry all these girls are being so rude to you. Sometimes they forget how scary it is to not know everything.  You can climb onboard my happy motherhood boat anytime you need help/advice.   You should be just fine as long as it is baked.  You shouldn't eat raw pumpkin pie until you are done bf either.

  • Save the raw pumpkin pie til after the baby is born. DS LOVES raw pumpkin pie!
  • I'm confused about raw pumpkin pie?  When I make pumpkin pie it is liquid until after I bake it.  It does not look appetizing at all.

Neither does dirt or pillow stuffing, but people eat those.  DON"T JUDGE!  You don't know her life!

Wow you guys are a bunch of b!tches.  To be fair, key lime pie is not 100% safe to eat during pregnancy and it has the same egg issues as pumpkin.  Get off your high horses and stop being so hormonal.

It's not hormones. It's just a really silly question. A pumpkin pie is a baked good. Therefore no ingredient in the pumpkin pie would be raw. Therefore it would be safe to eat. How people cannot make this connection is beyond me

  • No, better not. Why don't you hand it over to me for safekeeping.

Meringue made with raw egg whites =/= baked pumpkin.  So no, pumpkin pie doesn't have the same issue as key lime pie.

I am curious how having basic cooking knowledge puts someone on a high horse, but ok.

OP - cooked eggs are ok. And pumpkin pie is delicious. Enjoy.

WOW! I was not judging it was an honest question!  I thought maybe there was a different way that you eat it..like possibly drink it or put it on ice cream? Jeez

  • Now I must admit when I make pumpkin.  (not going to put pumpkin pie...because I just make it and bake it in a dish to eat it without the crust)  I always dip the tip of a spoon in to make sure my spices are correct.

Tomorrow I'm making 72 cupcakes for my SD's soccer banquet.  And I will taste the raw batter to make sure it tastes okay.  I make them from scratch and there have been a few times when I needed more....something.

I have been making cupcakes during my whole pregnancy and knock on wood I have not gotten sick...but I just taste like 1/4th of a teaspoon of batter just enough to get an idea if its okay.  If I were not pregnant I would lick the bowl!

  • I'm going to take this oppurtunity to admit that I have NEVER baked a pie.  Not once in my life.

  • i thought you were kidding. Are you intending to crack a raw egg on top of the pie? Have you seriously not been eating eggs all these months? Eggs are in tons of stuff....

lol me too. for real, who bakes pies?

  • If you bake the pie, you are fine.

If you are just talking about pumpkin puree (pure, whipped pumpkin + spices) then you should be fine (no raw egg, but tastes like pumpkin!).

One of tastiest things I've done is do pumpkin puree (just straight up pumpkin guts put through a mixer or food processor) with the spices for pumpkin pie & sweetened condensed milk. Mix together and voila! Its really good!

I don't even get where key lime pie would be an issue since I have never seen a key lime pie with meringue on top let alone a pumpkin pie.  They are always topped with whipped cream.

I'm going to assume that the OP has never seen a pumpkin pie made and had no clue that it was a cooked pie.  As long as the pumpkin pie was properly made and cooked through then it would be perfectly fine to eat it.

  • Just to hear you all go *GASP* I have eaten runny eggs (you know, sunny side up) at least three times in my pregnancy and the baby is just fine.  What ever happened to the old "If you dont have anything nice to say, dont say anything at all" rule?
  • Ummm....meringues are cooked. That is why the pretty peaks are brown.

    That is all.
