My LO is measuring in the 9th percentile, which means of fetuses her gestational age, 9% measure the same size as she is (meaning she is on the small side).

I agree with pp, this probably means the baby is in the 10th percentile for growth. 10th percentile and under indicate Intrauterine Growth Restriction, which means the baby isn't growing properly or getting adequate nutrients. How far along are you?

It's based on how many people/kids measure the same OR smaller than you / your baby. So if you're in the 10th percentile, then only 10% of others measure the same size or smaller. 50th percentile would be average - half measure smaller, half measure larger.
That probably means your baby is in the 10th percentile for growth, 90% are bigger than your baby. I wouldn't be too concerned about it, anything 10-90% is considered normal. It's not considered IUGR unless the baby is below the 10th percentile.

well im 37 weeks tomorrow, i have been going every tuesday for BPP tests and every thursday for NST, last week i was in the 10th %ile (IUGR) im only 5' tall and was like 110lbs when i got pregnant, they kept telling me it was nothing to worry about but today when i went, because i dropped below the 10th %ile, and something to do with the placenta, they are going to induce me next week !! im just nervous since this is my first baby and i dont really know what much of this means
DD was in the 3rd percentile. Nothing was wrong, and she is now in much high percentiles. It was just genetic, I was a very small baby.
Just wanted to say that it isn't necessarily any reason for concern.
This is so true. Both my kids went negative on the growth chart for a while. They were both BF and BF babies do have a tendency to be smaller. As a matter of fact, there is a whole other growth chart for BF babies that is not commonly used in the US. The thing is to not worry about the % but is your child meeting the milestones and trending upward - even if low on the %.
I am in the same situation, tho LO has finally increased in weight. Two months ago I was in the 15th percentile and was scheduled for a BPP and a NST once a week. two weeks ago I jumped back into the 25th percentile but am still keeping my weekly appt. My doc says this situation is normal for me due to me being so small. I am also 5' and weighed about 100lbs before my pregnancy. If they are inducing you at 37 weeks, I would say that they feel that your baby would benefit more from being born now then waiting another 2 to 4 weeks. Your placenta might not be benefiting your baby anymore either. Good luck and hope you and your LO do fine.

If you don't know what it all means, please DO NOT hesitate to ask your Dr questions! It's their job to answer.
I'm in the same situation, as I stated above. I've been having ultrasounds every 4 weeks to check on LOs growth and NSTs every week. I was also quite small before I got pregnant (and still am, even though I've been gaining weight).
My Dr will induce me in my 39th week if LO hasn't arrived on her own in case the issue is with the placenta, although the high-risk Dr that oversees the u/s is leaning more towards the fact that I'm just a small person.
Best of luck to you and your little one!

I was induced with my daughter at 38 weeks due to a failing placenta and IUGR. My daughter was born perfectly healthy! Small (5lbs 6oz) but healthy. She never spent a moment in the NICU or even really away from us. You and your baby will be just fine.
Re: what is the 10th %ile ???
10th percentile for what? Belly size?
