Babies: 6 - 9 Months

BFing and solids (xp)

At DD's 6mo appt today the pedi said we should add in a second meal of solids. We started solids at 5mo, just 1 meal, and DD eats about 1 1/2-2oz. Pedi said each meal should be 4-5oz of puree at this point, but that seems like a lot to me, especially considering she only drinks 2-3oz bottles of BM at a time.

I'm just concerned she will replace too much BM with solids. Does 8-10oz of puree sound about right for a 6mo old? or am I being overly cautious?

Re: BFing and solids (xp)

  • That sounds like a lot to me, but then again I have been super cautious about solids to make sure breastfeeding continues too. We are doing 2-3 oz of solids two times a day at almost 8 months. Daycare thinks she is ready for a lunchtime feeding too, and we are going to try adding it but of course its making me nervous it might affect her nursing. I say follow your baby's cues. She will let you know if she is full, hungry, etc. But I am interested what other ppl say- i might be too conservative with solids?

  • That sounds like a lot.  Our pediatrician gave us similar advice at her 6-month appointment and I held off on increasing her solids until she seemed ready for more.  Somewhere around 7 months she started to be a lot more interested in solids so we added a second meal then a third almost immediately after.  At 8 1/2 months she eats 3 solid meals a day but no more than 2-3 ounce per meal.  All that to say, don't stress too much about it--maybe just wait for signs that she would like more.

  • That sounds like a lot to me, as well. LO is just 6 mons old, and while we do have 3 solid meals a day, he only eats 2 oz max in a sitting.

I agree with other posters, follow your LO's cues.

  • DS gets 2 solid meals a day, probably around 4-5oz. But he's a big eater, he nurses every 2ish hours (or 8oz bottles when I'm at work).

  • Seems like an awful lot to me but then again my boy only eats about a teaspoon of solids a day...

  • I was going to post a similar thing tonight.  Our pedi suggested 3 meals a day at 6 months!  I was surprised because we just started solids a few weeks ago and are only doing one meal a day and everything I read said that the majority of her calories should be from BM for the majority of the first year.  The ped said that she should be getting much more calories from food.  I tend to agree with you guys and don't want to cut back on nursing yet.

  • DD is just shy of 7m and has two meals of solids a day, each of which is about 2 ounces. So yeah, I think 4-5oz is a lot. Start with a couple tablespoons and increase as she asks for it...you're mom, you know her best.

DD also decided to go on a nursing strike today, and it's killing me. I don't know what's wrong but I'm not ready for her to stop nursing, so if it continues through tomorrow, I may decrease the solids to get her hungrier for nursing. My poor little girl. :(

Pretty much this. DD is 7 months and eats about 1/2 of a 4 oz jar of baby food twice a day. I nurse before I feed her though. You should not be replacing a feeding with food yet. 4 oz each time sounds like a lot to me.
