How long for food poisoning to set in?

I had sushi for lunch about two hours ago. I am starting to feel really sick. I can tell it's going to get ugly. Too soon to blame it on lunch?

  • The only time I had food poisoning it took about 4-5 hours until it really hit me in the middle of the night.  Man it was bad.

  • I had salmonella once. I ate dinner at 8:30ish, got home by 1:30ish and it had started at that point.

I started with abdominal bloating, not nausea. That's a frequent sign of food poisoning, and bloody diarrhea. So if you're just nauseated, it might just be random.

Also, this is why I will never go to White Castle again.

Trust me, it's not just nausea.

  • 8 hours for some things...

4 hours for others...    (at least in my experience)

  • I'd probably chalk it up to lunch not sitting right (vs. the far worse idea of food poisoning).  I've definitely had days where torture was upon me but didn't last more than a few um, instances.

  • When I had food poisoning it took about 5 hours for me to feel like crap and then another hour before I was blowing from both ends.  For your sake, I hope it's not food poisoning!

  • A few years back I had to go to a food-safety course for my job at the time, and they were teaching it could take 24-72 hours. Huh? Sorry you are not feeling well!

  • It hard to say because different strains can take different periods of time to take effect.  I had 'Shigella' once and was contacted by a city official from the health department after the Dr.'s office contacted them.  The woman wanted to know of all restaurants I had eaten at within the previous 2 weeks.  It can take days to show any sort of signs.

It was horrible, I had horrible stomach cramps that felt like someone had punched me in the gut repeatedly and had to go on antibiotics.

  • In my Public Health class, depending on the type of food borne illness (FBI), onset of symptoms can be as early as 4 hours or as late as 2 wks.  The most common FBI symptoms are within 8 - 72 hrs.

  • Maybe I picked something up while I was in the pedi's office last week then. It's the only place I have been other than the hospital in weeks and I doubt I got sick at Target this morning. Either way, two hours later I can say this is definitely something, food born or otherwise.

  • It really depends... could be 4, 6, 8 or 24 hours.

The worst food poising of my life was maybe back in 2002...it was a bad dinner at an italian restaurant...by the next morning I was feeling BAD...and by 1:00PMish it was coming out of both ends and it didnt stop for 3 days. Terrible terrible terrible.

I more recently got food poising from sushi, and I was told that its acutally most likely from the rice and not the fish. Apparently its common to get a lot of food born illnesses from rice. Gross.

     Hope you feel better!!
