Food Allergy

What's our next step?

We had the RAST test done a few weeks ago and got some 2s, some 3s and a 4.  Family doctor says avoid the 3s and 4 and we should be good.  As all of you know, avoiding certain foods is a pain and probably something all of us wish we didn't have to do. I'm wondering whether we should take her to an allergist to possibly rule out some of our positives or just suck it up, avoid the 3s and 4 and retest in 6 months or so.

  • I'd like to know opinions from the experienced moms too.

I was told to avoid all but the 1s....  How old is LO?  What are the allergies?

  • I would bring your LO to an allergist for sure.. Also, our allergist said if they have reactions and test postive (at any level) that we should avoid.  Allergies are so unpredictable.  Just b/c they test 1 or 2 doesn't mean their next reaction won't be ana.. Also, did they give you a rx for an epi pen? If not ask for one.  Make sure you always have epi pen and benadryl with you at all times! GL!

  • I can't imagine why your doc would want you to try level 2.. Level 2 is considered Moderate Level..  My son's milk is at level 2 (high level 2).. and he's miserable if he has an accidental exposure to dairy.  I guess everyone reacts differently and there are some people that don't even show a reaction to a level 4 so it depends.

I think you should take her to the allergist.  A child with multiple food allergies should always have an allergist. Your pedi doesn't specialize in allergies and i was able to have the allergist answer questions that the regular doc would never have known..  This way you can possibly do a food challenge with the allergist and determine if you should continue offering it to her even at a level 2.
