Need some rolling help! (XP from 3-6)

I thought I should post this here too, as maybe some more of you have had the chance to go through the whole rolling to the tummy while sleeping thing.  TIA!!

We are having some sleep issues because of DS's rolling...for a while, he would roll over to his tummy randomly in the night, wake up crying, and we would turn him over and he'd fall right back to sleep. Then, he started rolling over, crying a little, and put himself back to sleep on his tummy.  NOW, for over a week, he has been waking up again when he rolls over, and just FREAKS out.  We're not talking gentle fussing, we're talking full on red faced screaming; we've tried rolling him back to his back, and he won't calm down; the only thing that will get him back to sleep is to rock him. And then the whole process starts all over again.  Last night, we did this for 6-1/2 hours before we finally put him down to sleep in his swing.  PLEASE tell me that someone has advice for us!  We have tried rolling up a towel and putting it on his side so he won't roll, but he rolls over it anyways.  What can we do?

  • Ugh, this is the worst transition. Unfortunately, I don't have any real advice and I think this is just something they (and we) have to get through.

DD went through similar stages as your son - first she would roll and we'd just flip her back. Then she would roll and go to sleep on her tummy. Now she rolls and must be flipped back, shushed, given the paci, sometimes rocked to sleep. She does go back to sleep on her tummy about half of the time now, but sometimes she just gets REAL pissed.

One thing that kind of helped was we started putting her on her belly for naps so she could get used to sleeping that way. She still gets mad sometimes in the middle of the night on her tummy, but like I said above, she does go back to sleep maybe half of the time. Hang in there, I hope it ends soon for you!

  • Yeah, DS went through that... which means H and I did too. Ugh. I do not miss that phase.

We just worked with him as much as we could to get him rolling belly to back. It took about three weeks for him to decide that he'd pay attention to what we were teaching him and then another week to decide that it was pretty cool and learn how to do it consistently, but we all sleep much better now.

But the "OMG WTF position is this and how did I get here... and how do I get back... MOM, DAD HELP" phase really does suck.

You'll want to stock up on some caffeinated products for the next couple of weeks. Good luck!

  • I thought i'd be slick and let him sleep in his RNP or swing once this phase started. I figured I'd give him a break from the crib since he couldn't seem to stay comfortable. I think it made it worse. We still can't get a good nights sleep when he's in his crib! He's 6m1w.  ugh

Oddly enough, I don't think it's the tummy vs back thing for him. He rolls until he hits the side of the crib and then gets uncomfortable when he can't go any further. Sometimes he gets kinda stuck on his side... but he naps on my bed sometimes during the day and will roll around but doesn't do the screaming thing. I think it's because he has so much room.  Maybe I should get my 6mo old a king size bed?? LOL
