Cloth Diapering

Newborn stash/registry questions

The goal is to do prefolds and covers after talking to several friends who CD and figuring out what their favorites are, then likes/dislikes about others. I know a lot of it is individual preference, but I know that with DH, whatever he'll learn first is going to be what he is comfortable with. I'm trying to add to my Amazon registry now so I can get the diaper part over and done with... it's the very last thing I need to add! Please correct anything below that is incorrect, I'm trying to gather from multiple sources and I'm not sure I have a firm grasp on everything quite yet.

My first question is... is it OK to skip the NB size prefolds? We're going with GMD, I'm thinking that starting with the yellow edge is doable. From what I'm reading, you can fold down any extra height if needed without causing leak issues. We have a giant box of disposables that we'll use for the first couple weeks or until the cord falls off; they were free to us, so we'd like to make use of them.

Outside of that, I'm reading/hearing mixed opinions on which is better for Thirsties Duo wraps; snaps or aplix? Thoughts? We are 95% sure we're one and done, so we'd resell after DS outgrows them.

Here's where I get a little lost. I've never 100% grasped the concept of adding hemp, etc. as a soaker layer. I've read through the FAQs and $10 says it's in there and I missed it. Is that an option with the wraps and PFs?

Outside of that, here's what we've registered for:

-36 yellow edge PFs

-36 red edge PFs

-36 brown edge PFs

-4 Thirsties Duo wraps, size 1

-4 Thirsties Duo wraps, size 2

The goal is to do laundry every 2-3 days.

Re: Newborn stash/registry questions

  • I'm assuming this is your first baby based on siggy so you reallyhave no idea what size baby will be right? I would plan on buying a dozen NB PF's at the end unless the doctor is telling you to plan on a 10 lb baby. You can always wait until the end to order those though based on baby weight estimates. My twins were 6 lb 6 oz and 6 lb 9 oz at birth (so small for singletons) but are over 9 and 10 lbs now and we still use our orange edge PF's trifolded in our thirsties covers and they fit perfect! When you have to fold down the top or back you risk leaks and it makes it very bulky on baby. I guess if you don't plan on tri-folding it may be different though. I would also get a few more covers. We can usually only get through 3-4 changes without dirtying a cover which means you will need 3-ish a day to be safe so a total of 6 would be solid if you only want to do laundry every 2 days. Also, waiting any longer than 2 days to do laundry will make for a very stinky pail, diapers harder to get clean in the end and you will have to split into two loads anyway. If you have a large capacity washer you should do no more than 20-24 diapers in a load (about 2 days of NB diaper laundry.) BTW, good choice on the GMD PF's, we LOVE ours!!!

  • Oh, and aplix vs. snaps: I much prefer my aplix on my newborns but I got a mix since most people are divided on this issue. Sometimes babies are between snaps in sizing and to avoid it being too tight or too loose it's nice to have the option of aplix for a custom fit. But of course the aplix doesn't last as long. So I think if you buy your size 1's in a few of each then by the time you are ready for size 2's you will know which you prefer. Or if you want to order now because you are registering, just go ahead and register for a mix of both.

  • Yep, first baby. Good point about not knowing the size, I still need to look into the types of folding. One of my friends CDs her triplets and swears by the angel fold, but I need to get a folding CDs for dummies tutorial Smile

Good point about the stink factor and 2 days, also with the covers. I have a couple at home that were given to me from a friend, I need to figure out what size they are. We do have a large capacity washer, top load, washing directions are next. Oy vey. Just when I think I'm done...

     Thank you!

  • I think you can skip the NB size prefolds. Your disposables should hold you over until your LO can fit into the yellow edge prefold.

I prefer the aplix because they go on quick and are a better fit.

Did you register for any wetbags?

Not yet re: wetbags. Any brands you recommend? How many?

  • I have 2 large hanging ones for at home. 2 mediums and 1 small for being out and about. I use some of the mediums around the house right now because I have 3 changing stations at the moment.

Have all planetwise wet/dry bags. They work really well!

  • You will need snappis, cloth wipes (if you're using them), wet bags, pail liners, possibly fleece liners (which you can make for dirt cheap out of fleece from JoAnn Fabrics), and CD friendly diaper cream (CJ's BUTTer is highly recommended). If you're planning on using sposies for the first couple of weeks, you probably won't need newborn GMDs, but I wish that we had gotten them. We got bummis sized 7-15 lbs and they were so big on LO when she was just born that she was uncomfortable.

Thanks. I do have snappis on there (a pack of 3 size 1 and a pack of 2 size 2), I need to venture into the rest.

What about doublers? The verdict is still out on whether or not we're having a shower, so this is turning into my ultimate shopping list as well.

  • Definitely skip the orange edge if you want to save $$$.  DD was just under 8lbs at birth and is now just under 9 and we've been using the yellow edge since she was a week old.  They're a little bulky, but not bad.  With a giant box of sposies, you should have time to order orange edge if your baby is super tiny.

I might get more Duo 1s since they are more likely to have leaky poop in the early EBF/FF days.  We have 8 which is a lot, but then it's easy to keep one extra in the car, one in the diaper bag and the rest floating around the house/laundry.  I got 8 for $40 from Craigslist though so didn't have to spend a ton on them.  I'd get velcro for the 1s.  It doesn't last as long, but should be fine through 18lbs and then to resell.  It's a lot easier to get a good fit though.

You might even be able to go straight from yellow to brown, but you might only need red.  DS is still in red edge at 2 and 24 lbs.  They're snug to snappi, but fit perfectly trifolded into the Thirsties Duo 2s so I'm not sure we'll ever need to move up to brown since DS's poop is solid so I don't mind trifolding for him since his poop doesn't leak out to the cover.

I like to snappi for DD and leaky poo, but DS's poop is solid so rarely goes through to the cover when trifolded so 4 size 2 covers is plenty, but you won't really know how your kid's non EBF/FF poop is until they're older and you won't know how old they'll be (and how many solids) when they need to move up to size 2s).

Doublers just depend.  I'd need them for overnight, but we don't use prefolds overnight.  I don't need them during the day.
