C-sections

Having 3+ C-Sections?

My husband and I want 3 or 4 children. I just had a C-Section with my daughter, and am worried about the ability to have 3 or more children. My main concern is the need for a vertical incision...do any of you have experience with multiple C-Sections? Were they able to do all horizontal incisions, or did you have to have a vertical due to excess scar tissue?

  • I dont' have any advice for you - but I just had a c-section too and am feeling anxious about future pregnancies as well! I'm worried I will have to have less children and space them out more. So I am curious what others say as well!

  • Just wanted to let you know I'm having my fourth C-section in January.  My middle two are only 17 months apart!

I've had no complications at all.

Your Dr. will monitor you, but I'm sure all will be fine!

    HTH!

  • I had my 2nd c/s in Feb. My first incision was a vertical incision and my second one was horizontal. My dr told me that I could have 2 or 3 more kids for a total of 3-4 c/s. My vertical incision was due to the fact that my first was born at 28w4d and my uterus wasn't big enough to handle a horizontal cut. My second was born at 38w1d with the horizontal cut.

all my OB's have told me that it always depends on the individual- some women can have two and the scar tissue is like concrete, and others than have 8 and be fine. On a pure anecdotal note, I know a LOT of large family mama's who have had 6-12 and its been OK. :)

This is what I've heard as well.  Every person heals differently.  I'm hoping I will heal well enough that three won't be a problem.

  • You should be fine to have 3 or 4 children.

You might want to look into VBAC for your next baby, since there is an increased risk with each c/s that you have.  But even so, the overall risk is small.

If I read her post correctly she had a vertical incision and that usually makes someone not a candidate for a VBAC

  • this was my first question the morning after my c-section when I saw my ob. and he said 5 c-sections shouldn't be a problem and we can go from there. I didn't like being pregnant (it was a very hard pregnancy) but man do I love this little girl!!!!! I would love to have as many kids as I am cleared for!!!!

You are right, a vertical incision is usually a contraindication for VBAC.

The OP was a little unclear but my understanding was not that she had a vertical incision but that she was worried she would need one in the future if she had too many c/s and the lower part of her uterus became too scarred.  Maybe I misunderstood.

  • I've had three and and my Dr said there shouldn't be a problem with me having another one.

Oh and all three have been horizontal incisions.

  • I'll be having my 3rd c/s in January.  My ob (and I think most do it this way) removes the original scar and creates a new incision in the same place.  I've talked to my ob about having 4 kids, she said no problem and never insinuated that even more would be a issue.

It all depends on how things look each time they go in (scar tissue, etc).  Your ob should talk to you about it after each c/s.

Vertical incisions are so so rare these days, I wouldn't worry about that!

  • It all depends on your body and the scar tissue.  My friend wanted four children.  She just had her second section in April. She was told that it would not be safe for her to get pregnant again due to scar tissue and removing the baby.

  • I've had two, horizontal, c-sections and I'm having my third c-section at the end of the month.  I was complimented on my scarring during my second c-section and I'm hoping this time around the surgery is just as easy as the previous two.  I don't plan on anymore children (getting tubal ligation) but I imagine the OB would be able to tell me the status of my scarring when she's in there this time around if I were considering more children.

  • I am in the same boat in wanting 4 or so kids and am very happy to hear that so many have had multiple successful C-sections.  I am going to try VBAC this time around but I am less worried about another section if thats they way it has to go, thanks!

  • My ob said that 3 was about her max comfort level. I've had 1 so far, but Ive heard of people having 4+. That was also one of my concerns.
  • After my second c/s my dr. said I basically had no scar tissue and she's "fine with a third."  I didn't ask, she volunteered it.  Agree with everyone who said every person is different.
