Cloth Diapering

Diaper rash or allergic reaction or both?

what did it look like in their diaper area?

Lucy has some bumps that started yesterday, they seemed to get better after I put some hydrocortizone on them.
They aren't bothering her but I'm wondering if it is a reaction to something?

FWIW they don't have heads and they are very slightly raised and only where her diaper covers.
And it seems to get worse if I have a PUL cover on her vs. a fleece cover

Any thoughts?
it looks sort of like this ( I found it online)- not the inside but toward the outside with just the bumps

  • I know it sounds odd, but it could be cradle cap (seborhea dermitis<sp?>)  My daughter gets bumps anywhere....they make a cream that you can get from the pedi to less harshly get rid of it [Promiseb], but Hydrocortisone will also work, but becareful, because you can't use it longer than 2 weeks on an adult, so I don't know how long on a baby...it thins the skin and can allow tearing with simple wiping.

  • We had something kind of similar looking.  It turned out to be an allergic reaction to the detergent (Rockin Green) we have switched to Allen's and the rash hasn't been back.

hmm I didn't do my extra rinse that I usually do, I wonder if that is the issue?

We had this happen when we used EcoSprout.  Switched back to TinyBubbles and the only time it has happened since is when the extra rinse wasn't done.

you think if I just throw the clean dry ones in for an extra rinse and dry them they will be ok to use?

  • That could work!  I unfortunately wound up stripping all of my diapers because my DD "helped" me fix the diapers.  I lost track of what was freshly done and what had not been cleaned/rinsed again.

  • One other thought - how do you dry your diapers?  If you hang them outside, you might have pollen or something on them that is causing the reaction.  A simple rinse and tumble dry should help.  I may be wrong.  Anyone else know?

I do both, but hadn't hung to dry recently, until this last time, but i finished them off in the dryer with some wet clothes.

I'll try throwing the clean ones in for a rinse/dry in the dryer and see if that helps

  • It kinda looks like a yeast rash to me by the picture. I could be wrong though. (Or possibly my girls "yest rash" is truly not yeast)
