Thoughts on consistency between daycare and home?

I've been trying to keep things as consistent as possible between daycare and home (particularly with his routine of naptimes and giving him solids, etc.) to make things easier for LO, us, and DCP.

We give DS a pacifier to sleep (at naps and bedtime) but rarely use it any other time (maybe on a long car ride to help him sleep in the car). We recently switched from smaller pacifiers to one sized for 6 months and up and when I gave the new paci to DCP, it turns out she hasn't been using the paci at all.

I'm actually impressed that DCP doesn't use it.  But now I'm wondering if we should try not to give it to DS at home either?   I hope I'm not setting him up for having to get used to not using a paci at naptime every Monday (since he got it all weekend). Or, do you think he knows the difference between what he gets here vs there, (like at DCP he doesn't even want the paci, but at home he's used to using it so he wants it)?

  • babies def. know the difference b/w home and daycare! However, it would not hurt to wean him off it if that's what you want. I am not a big fan of pacifiers but I am not against them either. My kids used them but not a lot and gave them up very easy, DD by 4mo and DS by 6mo.

  • I'm pretty sure DD has always slept and eaten differently (most likely better) for our DCP than at home.  I wouldn't be concerned that DS doesn't get the paci at daycare.  I think of a paci as a tool you use if/when you need it, so think of it as a super positive that he doesn't need it at daycare.

  • They definitely know a difference between daycare and home.  We went both ways - for Maggie she never used the paci at daycare but used it at home (she tossed them out of her crib at 9mo and when I didn't put them back in she never looked back) - for Molly we eventually broke her at home at 18mo but then daycare used it for naptime for a few more months until she gave it up on her own.  Either way the taking away of the paci was way easier than I thought it would be for both of them.
  • I was like you - she would use the paci at home to go to sleep for nap times and at night and was surprised when DCP said she didn't use it there for nap times. She also doesn't sleep on her tummy there, but does at home. DCP says she sleeps great. So, I guess just keep doing what you're doing until you learn that something isn't working. FWIW, DD doesn't really use the pacifier anymore at home but that's just a recent development.
