Food Allergy

wheat allergy ?

My son just had some more ige levels tested after we found out he tested positive for some basics.  The new numbers are higher than the basics. His peanut number is 8, which we were worried about, but now in his second tests, his wheat number is 41 and his cat number is 38. So much higher. We have two cats, and he eats things with wheat. His total ige is 300.

Just wondering, If we have to take him off of wheat, does this mean gluten free also?

Re: wheat allergy ?

  • I have a wheat allergy but am not gluten-free. I know gf people tend to avoid oats due to possible gluten x-contamination, but I don't avoid oats.

  • did he react to the wheat or the cats?  If he hasn't reacted- you could have a false positive.  Check with your allergist to get his/her opinion- but if you haven't seen any reaction to wheat and the numbers are that high- I'd bet it's a false reading.

If you do have to pull wheat- a wheat allergy is different than a gluten issue- but you'll follow a pretty similar diet.  The  same reason people with celiac's have to avoid certain things (oats, french fries at restaurants etc.) will also fall under your allergy precautions due to cross contamination.

  • He doesn't react to living with cats, but in the past has been itchy/red from being around dogs (short haired dogs, not my mothers golden though). He has not reacted to wheat.

He has never tried peanuts, soy, eggs, but is on milk based formula (which could be the cause of his eczema and intermittent reflux)

Next step is the skin tests right? I have an appointment for over a month from now...
