Re: sleeping positions and leg aches

  • Ugh, I am with you on the leg cramps! It's driving me crazy! It's especially bad in the morning because my dogs like to climb up on the bed and lie on my legs. I feel so guilty having to kick them off all of the time! I put a quilt under my mattress pad for extra cushion, and I have a body pillow that I curl up with and that seems to help a bit.

  • For the most part I sleep with a pillow between my legs and that helps.  I sometimes give myself a couple of minutes break and lay partially on my back -- kind of lean over and put a pillow behind my back for support.  That way I'm not completly flat on my back (cause that's not comfortable for me anymore, either) but the pressure is off my side for a moment.

  • Oh my gosh!!! YES!!!! I thought I was the only one...it is awful!  Sometimes I wake up on my back by accident because the pain is so awful...the pillow thing really does not work because I flip so much...this is going to be a long couple of months!
  • I seem to be having this issue lately. I had two intense leg cramps in my calves when I awoke recently..it feels like murder! Doing foot rotations and little stretches always helps before bedtime. I purchased my boppy body pillow too which seems to help. Oh, and also heard eating bananas (potassium) helps too!

  • The snoogle helps a lot, but I still need to wake up and switch sides every so often. I recommend the snoogle for the best possible positioning though. It isn't 100% but is the best thing I can find! Amazon has it for 45.00
  • Try a thicker pillow between your legs. I just got a Sealy 2 in 1 maternity pillow and it's a lot thicker than the regular pillow I was using before - at first it felt weird but when I woke up in the morning with no leg or hip aches I was thrilled. Having the upper part of the pillow under my belly also helps me sleep a bit turned on my tummy, not straight on my side, which helps too.

Also, it's ok to sleep on your back, especially if you prop something under one side so you're a little bit tilted. Both the OBs in my practice who I've asked about this have said don't worry about it until you're much bigger, and if there's a problem you'll wake up and change positions because you'll be really uncomfortable.

  • Yep.  I goes on all night long.  My hips and upper thighs ache and I have to switch sides several times a night.  Let me know if you find out anything!!

  • Ugh, yes my hips were feeling bruised from sleeping on my side until I put a squishy pillow under my hip.  This helps since our mattress is firm.  I also use a body pillow and another pillow behind my back so I can lean back a little to be halfway onto my back.  That's 4 pillows total, it's ridiculous but it helps.
