Upstate NY Babies

An update to my VENT below

First, thank you so much if you responded to my post. I needed to hear all of that and I appreciate it so much.

Now for a little perspective. My mil has been begging me to go through DS's baby book to review his nutrition record b/c "You'll find everything in there you need to do." Um. Okay.

So..I finally did. It's a doozy. Now DH is almost 40, but this is how he was fed and this is how I'm supposed to feed DS.

At his 8 week appt he weighed 12.5 pounds. As for food, he was eating in addition to his bottles, ( only formula (for MIL breastfeeding=bad), and only Enfamil, (she hates that we use similac) he was eating:

All green veggies

1/2 jar yellow veggies at dinner

Bananas or pears, 1/2 jar with breakfast and dinner

Applesauce and peaches

All cereals

Every day. Wow. Now I really get why she thinks I'm starving DS!

Re: An update to my VENT below

  • Yup...sounds familiar....My DH was eating solids VERY early.

See now, I would want to then say...well here is the AAP (American Academy of Ped. recommendations)...so there...or show her all of our posts, as we Moms of 2011 are the experts ;)

You are doing a great job and do not let her make you feel any other way.  He is such a cutie!

  • WOW!  just WOW!  At 8 weeks he was eating all of that?  That's insane!  He looks totally healthy to me in your siggy pic.  Chubby little legs and all!  :)
  • My DH started cereal at 5 days old, applesauce at 2 weeks old, cow milk at 6 months.  MIL was offended that I didn't do the same with my kids, afterall, hers survived it.  I told her that we now know it causes long term gut problems, she said none of her kids have problems!  LOL, total BS, they all have gut problems, 3out of4 have dairy intollerance, DH has serious gut problems.
  • Yes! Totally! They all have tummy trouble!! Wow.
  • WOW!!!  Sounds like she would benefit from receiving a print-out of the new AAP recommendations regarding solids!!!  Wink
  • My mom gave me my baby book (just so I could compare weights and lengths, she wasn't pushing anything, thankfully). I believe the pedi had me starting juice by 8 weeks or maybe 3 months, and then when teething, he advised her to give me dog biscuits because they wouldn't break apart as easily as childrens biscuits or cookies (which ps, she did. Yes, I have apparently eaten my share of dog biscuits, and lived to tell the tale). My my, how things change!

  • Irish. Dog biscuits. That.Is. Awesome and I laughed out loud at a little baby gnawing on a milkbone! Thank you! I needed a laugh and some clarity. Big Smile

What an awesome story. Love it.

  • Kim- I might just print some copies to keep in my diaper bag. Big Smile

You totally should!!!  FWIW- we've dealt with a lot of food issues from family b/c DS has severe food allergies.  I now keep important info in the diaper bag and when someone starts to tell me what I should be doing, I just give them a copy of the info!!  Shuts my family right up!  haha!

  • Here's my question: HOW did they get babies to eat all of that food at 2-8 weeks.  I work with teen moms, and at camp this summer they were all trying to force their 5mo olds to eat baby food, even though the babies still clearly had the tongue thrust reflex.  The babies would just push the food back out as soon as it was in, and the moms would conclude they must not be hungry.  So we had a conversation about development.

Smile--It sounds like you are doing a fantastic job.  Everyone has an opinion, but you know your son the best.  Following my gut vs what other's said was the hardest lesson I learned in the first year of parenting.

  • IT is time to tell DH or have your DH step in and tell her to shut the F-up.

He should have done this before it got to this point. Since it is his mother he needs to be the one to tell her to back off. She also needs to know she is making you uncomfterable. (Hopefully he is bothered by this too)

If DH will not tell her this, then it is time for you to get the AAP guidlines hand them to her and tell her that as much as you appreciate her advice that any comments or advice on the weight need to stop. You can even say that you have discussed feeding with the pediatrican so until he tells you otherwise you will be doing what you are currently doing. End of discussion!

Then you have to stick to your guns and refuse to acknowledge baby's weight with her any more.

    Good Luck
