When to stop lifting?

DD is about 21 lbs and I'm not sure when I'm supposed to stop lifting her. My dr. hasn't said anything about it. I know I have a ways to go to worry about it but I figured I'd ask now so I was prepared. Also did anyone lift their older child throughout the pregnancy? I can't see not carrying her around occasionally. TIA!

Re: When to stop lifting?

  • I lift both of my kids and will continue to lift my kids...unless some issue arises and I shouldn't.  DS weighs 42 pounds and DD weighs 29...no plans to stop.  Lifted DS throughout my last pregnancy as well.

  • I lifted my 20lb DD literally until the day I delivered DS. I started lifting her again 4 days post partum. If you have no medical need (like bed rest) then there really is no reason to stop lifting your LO IMO...

  • Unless something crazy happens, I don't have any plans to stop lifting my Molly clear up until my little guy gets here.  My theory is that I can lift anything I lifted before I got pregnant; I just need to be a little more careful about it.  Obviously, I won't be holding Molly over my head.  There's a whole pregnany lady balance issue that I expect will be pretty comical by the end of this pregnancy.  But I still intend to pick her up and cuddle her every chance I get.

DS is now over 25 pounds and I am lifting and carrying him all the time. It's difficult because I have back problems from my first pregnancy/after birth, but what choice do I have? As far as I know, it's a myth that you are supposed to stop lifting your children in subsequent pregnancies - and I don't see how it would be possible!

  • I haven't stopped lifting DS yet. He's about 24lb (I think). I do worry about giving myself a bad back, especially as I carry him on on hip all the time, but I'll probably carry on regardless.

  • My midwife mentioned that I should teach DS how to get into his own carseat, but that hasn't happened yet, lol. He's 30 lbs. I also carry him in parking lots for safety reasons and when he whines to be picked up. I've stopped carrying him up the stairs in our house because, frankly, it's exhausting. I try to let DH do the carrying and placing in the car, but he works and travels, so it's not often. DS has learned how to climb into his high chair, so that's a plus.

I'm just worried when he wants to be picked up and I have baby #2 in the sling or in my arms. How do you do it then? ;)

  • Although I am working on teaching Aubrey skills like going up and down the stairs while holding my hand and getting up on the couch by herself, I have no plans to stop lifting her. I just listen to my body and make sure not to overdo it. :)

  • If it's something you did before pregnancy, like lifting your LO or exercising, I'm pretty sure you can continue it while pregnant as long as you listen to your body and your Dr advice. My cousin is a photographer and was allowed to carry her 30 lbs camera bag/supplies while shooting weddings until the very end because it was something she did all the time before becoming pregnant.

This is basically what my OB told me. He said since I'd been carrying DD1 all along, it was fine to continue. It would be different if I hadn't been and suddenly decided to lift 25# weights or something, but anything I was doing before, I could continue doing while PG, just like working out.

  • I lifted DS2 all the way through my pregnancy and 2 weeks after my C/S was back at it (w/ a couple slips in those first 2 weeks - I mean, how do you parent a 19 month old w/o picking him up?!).  No issues.
