Baby Names

Would these initials stop you? (MAN for a girl)

DH and I were discussing girl names recently.  His grandmother's name is Mary, and she's one of the sweetest women I know.  I'd love to use her name for a future daughter.

DH's favourite name is Alice.  I mentioned the combination Mary Alice, and he pointed out that her initials would be MAN.  I'm not usually one to avoid initials unless they're obscene, but this might be an exception.  So what do you think, ladies?  Would you give your daughter the initials MAN?

  • Kids are really cruel, heck read on the first trimester board and you will see adults are too.  If you are in love with the name then I would go for it and hope she loves her name as much as you do.  If you can think of another name or combination it might be best to go with another one.

  • I probably wouldn't because I don't like weird initials. BUT most people wouldn't even put that together. Even kids. I'm pretty sure little boys and girls in grade school aren't asking what everyone's middle names are and putting initials together. What about Alice Mary anyways.?

  • I don't remember anyone in school being made fun of because of their initials.  Or thinking that hard about initials (now I'm deciphering if my bff's or sisters initials spell any thing) lol! If we have a boy we want a middle name that starts with A so his initials will spell JAM :)

Oh, I have a ridiculously long name list and this definitely isn't at the top right now.  But I did wonder, since so many people say that initials aren't a major dealbreaker for them, if this would prevent people from using the name.

  • I don't think it is a big deal. If she were to want a monogram I would make the last name in a larger font and put it in the middle.
  • Dh's are HER and if we have a boy his will also be HER because it is a family name and DH is the III and we will continue it with the IV.  I don't see a problem with it because most of the time kids don't use all three initials, they just use two so it would be MN.  Good luck with your decision.
  • I would def not..AI remember kids in school picking on people when their Initials spelled something..especially for a girl.

  • I don't think it matters at all.  Also, I really like Mary Alice.

  • Maybe use 2 middle names?

  • I am a former teacher and I would advise against it. I have seen too many kids be tormented for far less.

However... I live in the South and there is a tradition here to be called by your middle name so may I suggest Alice Mary N...?

  • It wouldn't stop me if the names meant a lot to me.  How often do you use your initials (all three?)
  • It woudn't stop me at all.  If kids are going to make fun of your child, it doesn't matter what name you chose, what the initials spell, how traditional or unique the name is, they will find something to make fun of.

My step father grew up with a girl named Ralph.(Named after her father who died before she was born.)  No one cared that she had a man's name, she was pretty, smart and popular.  If they wanted to, I'm sure the kids in her school could have had a blast teasing her over it, but they didn't.  It just goes to show that the name itself does not mean your child will or will not be teased, it is just an avenue that a bully could use to tease.

  • It would stop me from using Mary Alice Name. But, if it were me, Mary Alice would be her first name and I'd add a middle so her initials would be MA?N. Problem solved :)

Side note: I know a "Mary Alice" and I think its very pretty.

  • I wouldn't worry about it that much. My aunts initials are CAR, and my dad's are GAG. Neither of them got made fun of in school. If you love the name then I say go for it!

  • I love Mary Alice, BTW. I don't think initials should stop you unless it spelled something seriously awful. I think you are in the clear.

  • I would definitely not give my daughter the initials MAN.
  • I don't think MAN is all that terrible. My daughter's initials were almost EGG until I decided I liked a different FN better.

When my BIL and his BSC (now)wife broke up for the 75th time during her pregnancy, she decided to give the baby her last name and luckily she changed the baby's middle name, because her initials would have spelled GAG (except replace the first G with an F).

I do put consideration into what the initials spell so that I don't pick something as offensive as what my nieces initials almost were, but unless it's crude or offensive I (probably) wouldn't let it sway me.

  • I don't think it's a big deal. I can list the number of people who know my MN on my hands. There wouldn't be a reason that her MN would be common knowledge of the playground. I would think she'd be more likely to be called Virgin Mary or Bloody Mary. But I don't think that should prevent you from naming her Mary either.

We'd be very likely to call her Mary Alice though (rather than just Mary), which is why I'm unsure.
