Recommend Your Single Stroller

I don't know anything about single strollers, but we'd like to get one so DH and I can take the LOs out individually to do errands or for dr's appts. I'd like to spend less than $150 since this won't get used very much. Any recommendations? Should I just get one of those cheap umbrella strollers that are like $20?

Re: Recommend Your Single Stroller

  • For a lighter stroller to take in the car, I really like our UppaBaby G-Lite. It's really light and compact but also seems sturdy. There is also a G-Luxe that reclines (the G-Lite doesn't), but for an umbrella stroller, recline isn't an important feature for me.

  • We got a Combi Flare on closeout for flying (when we didn't want to worry about our "nice" stroller getting mucked up).  It was about $70 on closeout a year ago, and probably about as flimsy as I'd really use for errands.  The cheapest strollers always seem kind of short, and I know my DH wouldn't be comfortable using one that he would have to hunch over to use.  (But I've never tried to actually use the $20 umbrella strollers, so I can't say for sure.)  Albeebaby.com is having a good stroller sale right now, so I'd check out the lightweight options.

  • I love our Maclaren triumph - it's lightweight, small, easy to fold up, has a small sun canopy and basket underneath, and it seems comfy for LO.

  • I would get the cheap $20 one if you are not sure how much you are going to use it. Now, this advice is coming from someone who has not used a stroller in over a year but when DD could be convinced to sit in one, it was always are $20 umbrella one.

  • My main complaint with the cheap strollers is that the handles are really low and if you or your DH are tall, you sort of have to hunch over. Also, I'm not sure how many of them have baskets underneath if you need storage. However, if those aren't concerns for you, you may give it a shot.

If you or DH are tall, the Maclaren line tends to have handles that are higher and better suited for tall people. The most lightweight in their line is the Volo. I got two of them off Craigslist and both DH and I really like them.

  • Thanks for the suggestions! One question on the Maclaren's: are they hard to unfold?

We have a Maclaren Twin Triumph (and a BOB Duallie) and the Maclaren is a PITA to unfold. I have to use all my strength to push the bar in the back down. The BOB, on the other hand, unfolds so easily.

Hmmm, I have found them super easy to fold up. I wonder if it's because yours is a twin stroller?

I think they are.  Then again, I compare it to our city mini which is SO easy.  With my Maclaren (no clue on the style as it was a hand me down), I can't unfold/fold with one hand.

  • The fold is actually one of the reasons I got the UppaBaby G-Lite instead of a Maclaren Volo or Triumph. We had a Maclaren Easy Traveller frame stroller, and I always hated the "foot action" piece of the folding process.

Yeah, the foot action part is what I hate. And on the double, you have to do it twice. It's really a pain.

  • We got the Jeep Cherokee Stroller as our second stroller to keep in the car and travel with.  It's much better than a basic umbrella as it has a full sun shade, basket, cup holder, and isn't short.  At the same time, it is light-weight (13lbs) and folds up with one hand. It is also very reasonably priced (retail $70,  but Amazon has it for $49).
