So we had our follow-up GI appt today and DS is still bleeding so we decided it is now in his best interest to go from BFing to Elecare. I am definitely sad about it (had a good cry in the car on the way home) because I'm not ready to wean at all, even though I know it has to be done.
Did anyone else have to wean early and feel like that? It's hard!
DS took a bottle of it today and drank 5oz, which I thought was good. I am completely clueless regarding how much he should eat and how often, but I guess I'll figure that out!
I'm interested to see what his allergies are when he's older because I've taken so much out of my diet and apparently it hasn't helped : (
Re: BFing to Elecare
We had a rough bfing experience. Before we did the Elecare trial, DS was down to four ounces of formula, and I thought I was thisclose to EBFing. When he was fine after 24 hours of Elecare, it was a relief. When I reintroduced BM two weeks later(dairy free for 4 weeks, soy free for 2), DS' painful gas came right back. It was a heartbreaking moment. I still get sad, but I know it was the right thing. DS was around 11 weeks when he went on Elecare exclusively.
Remember that right now it is just considered an intolerance. He will probably grow out of it within 2 years.
We just started our first trial of butter and yogurt, and DS is doing well. He is now onto cheese, but hye wasn't fond of mild cheddar today. I am really nervous to start milk in 5 days.
Good luck! Going from BFing to formula is such a hard decision. For us, it was the right one. No more second guessing, no more worrying. I spoke with several lactation consultants, and every single one said that DS has benefited immensely from the BM he received, and he is better for it.
A friend told me "Some moms wean earlier than others. You are not a failure. You are doing what is best for you and your DS."
