Mid size suv with 3rd row?

Do you have one? Do you love it? Tell me more! I have an Xterra right now and hate it. Too high. Doesn't ride well. And there is SO little room in the back. No room for a 3rd carseat or even a third passenger with our two seats.

  • I have a Honda Pilot with the 3rd row and I love it.  It is not ideal if you need to use the 3rd row every day, but great when we need it.  And it is a split fold row so you can leave part of it down and still have some storage room if you need it.

  • I love my 2011 Explorer Limited.  We have captains chairs in the 2nd row and no console so people can pass right through to the third.  The third row is not built for adults though but is perfect for my nieces and nephews with they tag along with us.  We only have 2 kids so the 3rd row is alway open.  My friend has the same car and she has a newborn and 3 yo that are in the bucket seats and her 5 yo is in the 3rd row with a 5 pt harness booster.

The GMS Acadia also has that sort of set up as well as the Chevy Traverse.

All of the above are split 3rd row.

Otherwise most 3rd rows are hard to get at if you have carseats buckled in.  I traded in a Mercury Mountaineer with 3rd row that we never used because we couldn't get to it!

The pass through is critical if you want to get much use out of your 3rd row.  I drove a Volvo XC90 for four years but eventually traded it in for a mini van.  The Volvo had a 3rd row but we never used it.  With the way our car seats were positioned, you'd have to crawl over the seats to reach it.  Very inconvenient.

Now that I'm driving carpool I find that the captain's chairs in my mini van allow the kids to very quickly and easily reach the 3rd row.  It's a beautiful thing! ;)

  • I have a pilot too.  The 3rd row is actually functional but kind of like riding in the back seat of a compact or subcompact car.  I thought the HIghlander one was useless except for kids who wouldn't mind being squished.  Problem is you have to scramble over the front seat or go through the trunk or keep one side open so you can push it back to allow someone to climb in, like with a 2-door backseat.  It drives like a car, which I love.  Does have road noise issue.

  • We wanted a small SUV with a 3rd row so we got a Toyota Rav-4.  They don't all have a 3rd row, but i think the special editions do.  Ours is a 2007 i think.  It's a little squished when we're all in there, but it works.
  • I have a Jeep Commander with the third row.  The middle row splits in 3 which is nice - DD's seat is in the middle, but you can put either passenger side down to get to the third row even with her seat there.  She's in a Recaro Como rear facing and I've installed two of them (both rear facing) side by side and they fit just fine with one on the passenger side and one in the middle.  There's plenty of room for a passenger beside the carseat.  The third row also splits in 2.  The floor boards in the third row are really high (it has stadium type seating, so the middle row is higher than the drivers seat and the third row is higher than the middle), so it wouldn't be comfortable for adults for a lengthy period of time, but it works when we need it.  For my next car I definitely want the captains chairs in the middle.  You lose one seat, but it's so much easier.
  • I have a Buick Enclave and it has the captain's chairs with no console in the middle and bench as the 3rd row so people can get in the 3rd row without taking out any car seats. I love it!
