Volleyball ok?

I'm in a coed quad volleyball league that plays once a week.  I played on Monday and it wasn't all that fun trying to run around the court with cramps.  I just noticed that volleyball is on my doctor's no-no list.  Just wondering if I should  find subs for the remainder of the league (still have 7 weeks to go). It's good exercise but I don't want to continue if it could harm the baby....Ever heard of this? I'm wondering if I can finish out the first tri and then stop.  Maybe it's riskier the farther along you are with the potential for balls to hit your belly???

Re: Volleyball ok?

  • I would think it's a no go since you could end up diving for the ball or get hit.  My dr was really conservative and wouldn't even let me ride a bike during my last pregnancy.

  • If it were me, I would stop playing. I am always in the mindset of better safe than sorry!

  • If you don't plan to dive etc, you may be fine but I am a rule follower and probably would just sit the season out.

  • I play volleyball a lot and I've always stopped when I found out I was pg.  You're diving, balls are flying at you.  It would probably be alright, but who wants to take that chance?  I would find a sub just to be on the safe side.

  • It's up to you what you feel comfortable with.  I wouldn't be too concerned about playing in the first tri because the baby is pretty well protected (from balls and if you accidentally dive).  But what did concern me is if I got injured (i.e. sprain an ankle, blow out a knee), then what?  There aren't a lot of pain meds you can take when you are pregnant and the last thing I wanted was surgery while pregnant.

I quit as soon as I found out I was pregnant with DS.  This time around it was a moot point because we didn't get in our league, but the reason I quit was because I was paranoid.  I was at volleyball when I realized something was wrong (I started bleeding) with my first pregnancy, which ended in miscarriage.  Volleyball had absolutely nothing to do with my miscarriage, but I just didn't even want to tempt "the Gods" and play again.  On the flip side, I have a friend who played up until she was 8 months pregnant with both of her boys and had no issues.  I wouldn't recommend it, but to each their own.

  • I play volleyball too and the doctor told me no more, even in the first trimester. I'm not suppose to do any contact sports or jumping, ab exercises or lifting more than 10 lbs. It's always up to your jusgement, the doctors may be on the over protective side, but I know the amount of jumping, diving and body contact I have when I play that I'm opting out. Plus, as you said, it's not very comfortable.

  • Thanks ladies.  I guess I'm out for the season.  I'm already worrying enough as it is so you're right, why risk it!?

  • I'd say it's definitely riskier the further along that you are, but I definitely would not do volleyball, and I am pretty liberal in what I would/would not do.  Plus, the precautions are not just for baby, they are also for mom.  There's some horomone that your body releases to make you all sorts of limber when you are pregnant.  This can make it easier for you to get injured.  And it would really suck to be laid up while you're pregnant, not to mention, bad for both you and baby.
