Baby Names

Kepler

What do you think of this name for a boy? DH found it while searching through famous scientists. Apparently there is a scientist with this last name who discovered the orbit of the planets. He's in love with the name and I'm not sure how I feel about it yet.

Re: Kepler

  • I would only use it as a middle name, but it's definitely not awful!

Oh man. Johann Kepler did indeed identify the laws of planetary motion. He was also an apprentice to Tycho Brahe and used his work to help develop his theories.

Honestly - I think if you had to find his name in a book (and he's a rather famous astronomer) then you shouldn't use it for your child's name. Honoring someone with a name should be done because you have a personal connection to that person. And, it truly does not appear that you have that in this case. But, that's just my personal feeling.

I agree with Joy. Also, it is obviously a surname. Why pick a random surname as a FN for your LO? It would be the equivalent of naming a boy Einstein or a little girl Curie, especially if you have no connection to science academia.

  • You said it in the original post, it's a LAST NAME.

Hate it for a 1st name, could be okay as middle name.

It is a last name and should remain so.  I  actually like Tyco better ( but not by much).

  • Um, he does know that Kepler is his last name? Full name is Johannes Kepler.

It makes a very bad first name. Even Kepler isn't named Kepler, as a first name anyway.

If it would help, tell DH now that the following names are also out:

    Descartes

    Rontgen

    Planck

    Bohr

    Copernicus

    Newton

    Einstein

    Galilei

I totally agree.  If you didn't know that Kepler is one of the biggest scientists in history and didn't know what he is known for, I do not know why you'd name your child after him.

I know 2 little boys named Galileo and Copernicus.  Clearly, these parents are science people.  What I don't understand is why one got to be named a first name (Galileo) and the other got the last name (Copernicus).  I guess Nicolas wasn't obvious enough for them.
