C-sections

anemic and having a c-section

My levels were like a 9 and its supposed to be 14. Im now on iron pills and will be tested in 2 wks to see if it has gone up any. Now Im afraid to have the c-section done cuz im afraid to bleed to death. I kno it prolly sounds stupid lol but Im kinda freaked out now. Kind words would help ease my anxiety about it and also if u were anemic too please tell me ur story thanks. This is my 2nd c-section wasnt scared till now.

  • They will jsut watch you a bit more closely.

Are you symptomatic right now?   If not, you probably don't have anything to worry about.  If you are, they may just give you a transfusion if you need it..which really is no big deal.

It's routine to do repeat bloodwork the day after a csection..so if your #'s got too low or you were symptomatic..they would probably just give you a unit of blood to help you feel better

  • I was anemic with all 3 of my pregnancies and had/will have a c/s with all 3. Obviously, I didn't bleed to death. Just continue your iron supplements you will be fine. I actually had very minimal blood loss with my previous to sections.

Same - just take your iron pills.

  • I post this a lot so some may see me repeating my story. I was anemic before my surgery but never took my iron supplements regularly. My surgery went fine but a few hours later I actually passed out. Nurses rushed in and got me back around and they decided that I had lost too much blood. Two bags of blood and a 5 day stay in the hospital and I was fine. Honestly I was fine as soon as they got me back around. It was sort of scary when it happened but as long as your aware of a your body you should be fine. I have fainted before so right before it happened I called the nurses. They did the whole smelling salt thing and checked my bleeding. My advice is if you feel faint dont be afraid to tell someone and dont panic if it happens. I had to take iron and was on an iron heavy diet for a long time after surgery. I also looked sickly for a few months but that was because I didnt have much of an appetite and couldnt keep my nutrition up.
  • I was fine with my surgery, I have my operative reports, and I lost a very regular amount of blood.

But I am now concerned that I don't remember anyone taking my blood the next day (they did I have the results) I must have really been out of it, lol.

  • Seriously anemic and on iron pills for the last five months of my pregnancy. Basically, my dr. just watched the count and had a pint on hand because I am a bleeder.

  • During my pregnancy I was anemic.  My levels were around 9 and I just had a c-section.  I didn't need a blood transfusion, like they thought I might of needed.  They did up the dosage on my iron pills after my c-section and I get re-tested on Friday to see if my level went up.  I'm sure everything will work out.   I was scared to death too.
