Urine Smell

So I am finally starting to smell urine in my inserts (I have primarily synthetic inserts and I remember reading about people having issues with this) so I am wondering why this is happening and how to fix it.  They smell like this after a wash.  I do a cold prewash, hot wash cold rinse, extra rinse and extra spin.  I also use the smallest amount of Rock in Green so I wonder if I should use the 3 Tablespoons instead of two?  Any thoughts?  TIA!
Praying this little one sticks!

Re: Urine Smell

  • I would recommend stripping as a starting point.  I don't use synthetic inserts though so I can't be uber helpful.

  • I would try more soap. I boil my inserts when they stink only after use (they smell clean when they come out of the wash). If more soap doesn't help, try boiling.

  • From what I've read, urine/ammonia issues are caused from too little water not too little detergent. Our nighttime diapers were starting to really stink. I started rinsing them out each morning and stopped spinning the water out of my dipes on my initial cold rinse. My hope is that I'm tricking my machine into adding more water for the wash. So far so good. You could also add towels in w/your diaper laundry (assuming you have a HE washer w/all of this).

  • I soaked mine over night and I use Rockin Green as well.

  • strip them and then use the ammonia bouncer by Rockin Green in every first cold rinse cycle. Worked for me :)
