Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Possible flat head

Just wondering if anyone has dealt with this. DS is 9 months and at his check up today, the pedi mentioned that his head is a little flat. He thinks that it will even out and that it is hard to notice since DS has a ton of hair. DH and I didn't really know what to say or think about this. It was only when we got home that we realized it was weird that this was only now being brought up. DS head has been the same shape for months and months (he also has always had a big head, 97th percentile since birth) and hasn't changed even though he sleeps on his belly and side. The pedi didn't seem too concerned about it. I am just a little stumped about what to do now and am freaking out. Just wondering if anyone else has dealt with this.

Re: Possible flat head

  • Don't freak, worst case the pedi refers you to a neurologist, who then decides whether or not a helmet is necessary. DS had a really severe flat spot and has been in a helmet for 3.5 months... he loves it and it has helped a lot. Even in his case, the neurologist said if insurance wouldn't cover the helmet his head would eventually even out (just not as fast). Good luck!

  • If your doctor was not concerned, then it should be fine. C has had a flat spot the entire time, and our doctor is not concerned either.

  • A little boy in DS's playgroup has a really flat head. I actually think mom needs to get a second and third opinion about it because her pedi said "It will even out, don't worry about it." but it is seriously SO flat.

It's likely no big deal at all- but I would certainly get a second opinion if I were you.

The helmets these days are super cute and you can breathe a sigh of relief if your LO has to wear one to save that precious head from all those bumps and falls for a few months ;)
