Seeking registry wisdom (from a 2012 mom-to-be)

Greetings from a March 2012 mommy-to-be.  I hope you don't mind me crashing your board but I figured you all have been where I am, so you may have some words of wisdom with regards to registering.  

I'm anxious to start a registry and I imagine that anxiousness will only increase once we find out the sex here in another 5 weeks.  I don't want to have to re-do my registry multiple times, so I was wondering if any of you ladies had problems with doing a registry before the holidays?  Did you find that some of the items you registered for were discontinued after the new year?  Is it better to just wait until after January?  Hopefully my questions make sense and thanks in advance!

Congrats! I registered in November. The suggestion made to me was that a lot of items go on sale around Christmas so people could always buy off the registry during the xmas season. I checked my registry all the time and don't recall seeing many people buying items during xmas though. It was after my invites went out in January, that things started coming off. I would suggest letting family and friends know you registered so they could buy during sales. I did not find anything was discontinued after the new year. I also ordered my nursery furniture in November which is a good idea because depending on where you get, it could take many weeks! Good Luck

Congrats! March is a great month to have a baby.

I think I waited until the 5/6 month range to register, but I remember being sooo excited to do it. Don't wait until January, because that's pretty close to your EDD and people may want to buy early depending on when your shower is (mine was Jan 9th).

Nothing that I registered for became unavailable or was discontinued. Do your research and register based on positive reviews and you shouldn't have too many problems.

We got our registery done in Nov/Dec. From what I remember we didn't have any issues with anything being discontinued. It was great to register at that time because there were some crazy sales in the New Year that people were able to take advantage of.

Congrats! We did our registry before the holidays as well. I added to it and made changes online, though, pretty much right up until my shower (which was at the end of January). It worked out fine for us!

I will say though, that registering at BRU is frustrating. They have a lot of stuff in the store that's not available online, and vice versa.

Congrats! I registered in December and did not have any items discontinue. An upgraded version of the swing I chose came out the beginning of January. I went online and deleted the original and added the upgrade. You should be fine to register early. Have fun!

I did my registry around October/November. The swing/high chair/pack and play set that I registered for did discountinue. But a family member that went to buy one of those items for me let me know, and I was able to quickly make changes online. Just check up on it online in January. And like a PP mentioned, you might also want to check for new items in January as well.

I found out in the very beginning of November, and registered that day.  There were one or two items that were discontinued, but I honestly couldn't remember what they are now.  I would still register now if I were you.  Trust me, you will go back several times (at least online) and change your mind on things.

Thank you for the tips and pointers ladies!  I'm going to go ahead and register next month as suggested.  I used to work retail 5 years ago and I remember how items would sometimes get discontinued after the first of the year.  I just didn't want to get stuck re-doing a registry if that was the case with the baby industry.  Thanks again!

This is not totally related to your post... I never registered because I refused a baby shower but I just discovered buy buy baby and I was in heaven. The state where I used to live didn't have one nearby. I highly recommend it if you have one close to you. Have fun.

The minute I found out the gender, we ran to BRU...lol  I should have waited.  We had my baby shower in January and by then a lot of the nursery design was going out, like the border.  Someone got us 1 roll, but the style was discontinued by Christmas and we had to scrap the original idea.  Everything else was in stock.

Congratulations I did my registry and just checked back often to fix anything that was no longer available to buy.

I registered in November or December I think.  Products really don't go rotate that fast, so I think you are OK registering whenever you want to (even now would be fine).

I registered in October because for Christmas I just asked for baby stuff.  I don't recall anything being discontinued when my shower rolled around in January.  Geez that seems like a lifetime ago!
