Help please...milk breaking suction in breast shield...

I have the medela freestyle and havent been able to pump much all of the sudden.  I replaced all of the replacale parts and am still not able to pump much.  One thing that keeps happening is that milk is getting under my breast in the breast sheild.  Is this causing suction to break and may this be the reason I am not pumping much?  Would this mean I need a different size breast sheild?  If so, would I need a smaller or larger one?  Thanks for any help.

  • Yes that could definitely be breaking your suction.  That happened to me every once in a great while and I was able to just stop and wipe my breast and the shield and then continue pumping but if it is happening often I would get a different size.

This will help you determine if it's too small or too large.

  • I was having that problem also for a while. I was able to solve it for the most part by switching to a larger shield and using the hands free bra to help hold the shield tight.

It still happens once in a while if I move around too much while pumping. It must pull the shield enough that milk gets in there. Like PP, I stop and wipe it up and I'm good to go.
