It was recommended to me at OshKosh to just go with a jacket type at this age because they will be dressed in layers and such anyways. Her reasoning was that its a real PITA to get them in the car seat with such a heavy winter coat. I tend to agree and bought LO a sherpa lined hooded jacket. Until he starts walking, he wont be in the elements for very long.
I might buy one sometime early next year, but even the 12 month ones are giant on her. I have seen cute ones from OshKosh too. I also noticed quite a few at Kohls and Carters this weekend. I think its going to be a major PITA right now, and she def wont be hanging around outside much.
I'm not getting a coat for LO, just a winter suit. If we're outside for any length of time, she'll need the full suit. If she's only going to be running from the house to the car and back, then we'll just throw a blanquet over her or something, because she can't wear a coat in the car seat.

Kohls had a bunch for boys, not sure about girls. Target and Old Navy had some too. I'll likely get a coat and a suit so i'll have the option depending on the occasion. The little suits are so darn cute and the jacket is more practical.

I got a polar fleece one from Target. We have a heavier coat also if we go for walks. In the car they shouldn't wear heavier coats since it is dangerous if they get in an accident. You don't want a lot of mass (winter coat) between the car seat straps and the baby because since then they will be able to move in the car seat more.
