How do you make an iron-on applique?

I feel like a moron but do you use that you can put on the fabric and then iron it onto a shirt?  When I did it in the past I ironed the stuff on the back of my fabric but then had trouble peeling off the paper so that I could attach it to a shirt.  Help, what do you use and how do you do it?

Wonder Under or Stitch Witch work well.  If you go to Joann's or Hobby Lobby or a fabric store they can point you in the right direction.  I typically sew around it also so it stays better, but you don't have to.
