Baby Names

Does Iris make you think of the Goo Goo Dolls song?

We love the name Iris for another baby if we have one in the future.  I have a friend who every time it comes up brings up the Goo Goo Dolls song.  That is NOT why we like the name. :)

Is that what you think of?  I know that would be only a concern for a specific generation, if at all.

  • There's a Bumpie who posts here from time to time who has a gorgeous little girl named Iris. I think of her first. The flower second. The song maybe third.

  • I think it is a very pretty name.  The great thing about Iris from the Goo Goo Dolls is that "Iris" isn't really used in the song lyrics.....plus, as years go by it will fade more and more...and no one your child's age will have a clue about the song.

Yep...this is exactly where my mind goes too. And her DD is adorable!

  • Nope - flower.  And it's a pretty name :)

  • Ditto the poster who has a daughter named Iris. I also think of the flower and then Kate Winslet's character in The Holiday.

  • I definitely do not think of that, and I love the name!

  • I don't think of the song first.  I think of the flower and then of a nice gal I know with the name.  Go for it!!!  It's beautiful!

  • I think of the flower first. Then I think of an eye Stick out tongue

But I love the name, it's very pretty.

  • Nope, I just had to google the song lyrics since I was sure I hadn't heard it, but I most definitely have and didn't even know "Iris" was the name of it.

  • I love the name Iris. I really wish it was a name my husband would get behind. It is absolutely my favorite flower name. It does not make me automatically think of the Goo Goo Dolls song, but I do like that song.

This. Iris is one of those songs where the title doesn't necessarily fit the song. So while I love the song, I wouldn't put it together with the name Iris. Iris is beautiful!

  • No, not at all.  I think of a flower, one of my favorite flowers actually.

  • I don't think of the song automatically, no.

But I do like the song, and I think it's a nice association for an already lovely name.

  • I don't think of the song.

It's a gorgeous name! I love Cecelia, too, and think they sound great together.

  • LOVE the name Iris, hate the song!

If I knew someone IRL named Iris I might eventually make the connection, but I don't think of the song right away.

  • I think of the flower first and an eye second.

I wish the song was what I thought of first (or second). I don't like the eye association for some reason.

I like the name though. Very pretty.

  • I actually *ooohed* when I read this. Iris is BEAUTIFUL.

And I totally don't think of the Goo Goo Dolls song because they never say the word Iris in the song, its just the title.

  • I do but it's not the only connection and it doesn't ruin the name for me. It's very pretty :)

  • We just named our baby Iris! I pretty much considered every angle when choosing names, so of course (in my googling possible associations) the Goo Goo Dolls song came up. I knew the song, but had no idea it was called Iris before my googling. They never even say the name Iris in the lyrics, do they? Anyway, obviously now I think of  my baby, but before I thought of the flower first. It originally comes from the name of a Greek messenger goddess who travelled on rainbows.

  • My daughter is named Iris and I always get compliments on her name.  It's uncommon but not weird.  No one has ever mentioned the Goo Goo Dolls song.

I like that it's a name that is associated with beautiful flowers, rainbows and Greek mythology.  I take an annual picture of her with irises in bloom and I like to buy her things with rainbows. A lot of good things for one name.  :)
