I went to the doctor last week to confirm everything and he did my blood work. I came back with an almost 180,000 hCG level and a 29 progesterone level. My doctor said that although it is within the normal range for a singleton pregnancy there is also a good chance that it is twins. I heard a heartbeat on a doppler, but we didn't know to look for two until after the blood work came back. I dont go back until tomorrow, but its driving me crazy not knowing. Twins runs in my family, but this was spontaneous so it seems a stretch.
I was hoping that other people had similar situations like this and could tell me what result? I feel bigger and my symptoms feel 10x worse than anyone else I know whos similarly pregnant with a singleton...Any thoughts?
Re: high hCG and ended up with twins?
In your original post you mentioned hearing a h/b with the doppler. Do you have a doppler at home or was it in your OB's office?
I had very high hcG levels (and more exaggerated symptoms) with my singleton pregnancy, than I did with this twin pregnancy.
You say you feel bigger - is this your second pregnancy? That could be part of the reason there.
Good luck with the outcome!
I have never heard of an OB using a doppler that early. If you heard a h/b, it was likely your own and I say you need to find a new dr ASAP!
I agree, I don't think it's possible to hear the heart beat with a doppler at 7.5 weeks. I'm surprised the OB even tried. If you really heard it, then perhaps you are farther along than you thought. Betas really cannot determine twins, only and ultrasound will.

It totally surprises me as well that your doctor tried to get the heartbeat that early. My OB gave me this huge talk at 14 weeks that she was going to try to get the heartbeats but not to freak out if it took awhile or she couldn't find them cuz it was early etc...
good luck but there is no way to tell without an ultrasound.
ditto this
I say ask for an ultrasound...
my numbers were also high, but in the normal range, I thought I had ovulated early, but low and behold, it was twins

Maybe I just has a doctor that's ultrasound happy, but I had some spotting at 6 weeks, went to the ER and had high numbers, but they didn't see any fetal pole. so at 7 weeks my OB did a vaginal u/s in his office and we got to hear both heartbeats clear as day.

Detecting hb from a vaginal u/s is entirely different than hearing the hb on an external doppler.
