Two Under 2

If your 1st was PT before LO2 came along did you have any problems

after the baby came along? I'm not in any rush to PT DD1, but of course it would be awesome to only have one in diapers once the baby comes. So I've been debating getting a potty seat for her and just seeing what happens. We have less than 2 months though before the baby will be born and I'm worried that even if I did PT her, once the baby comes she might revert back into having accidents.

I'm just wondering if any of you went through this and what was your experience? Thanks so much for any helpful information!

  • I don't have experience but....

My 15 month old came to me 2 months before I was due and told me he was pooping in his pants.  I was stunned and didn't know what to do with that little tid bit of info.

I realized that I was tired, huge and really not in the right mind set to train him.  I also realized that I was about to have little to no sleep and that also would be a recipe for disaster as far as patience goes so I tabled it and figured I'd revisit it once the baby STTN.

While night nursing I read a bunch of potty training books and once the baby started STTN we went for it and had great success around 20 months old but it took a LOT of work on my part for a solid week or 2.

I will tell you that when potty training at a young diapers are actually EASIER until you've been at it a while.  Those first few weeks if you're really full steam training are brutal.

If you decide to go for it, my hat's off to you.  No way did I have it in me at the end of my pregnancy or right after the baby came.

Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.

  • Thank you so much for the great advice. You are absolutely right, I really don't have the energy right now to deal with PTing and accidents. It's a great idea to wait until the baby is sleeping through the night when I'll (hopefully) have a little more energy but the baby will still be small enough to not be too demanding of all my time.

A good book to read while night nursing is "Early Start Potty Training".

It's got tips based on age group.  The approach at under 2 is different than the approach at 3.

If you REALLY feel like a challenge try putting the baby on the potty.  I had the baby in the bathroom with us all the time anyway so one day I figured "I've got nothing to loose".  It sounds crazy but the way the book explains it makes decent sense.  I expected nothing with the baby and was pleasantly surprised that we got to use less diapers with the baby thanks to a half hearted approach to elimination communication.

I think I would have struggled to potty train if I'd had a mobile baby on my hands so that 3 - 6 or 8 month range was a good fit for me.

  • My DD is 20 months and we have had a potty seat for a while now. She used to just play on it, but when we started reading some potty training books, she wanted to use it. So when she asks to use it, we let her and we also ask her overtime we change her diaper if she wants to use it, which she usually does. I however do not want to deal with potty training right now or with a newborn, so I figure we'll let her use it on her own until the new baby is into a routine. I'm hoping by then, it will be an easy transition since she'll already be comfortable with it!
