I think the general population has a terrible choice in names, so no I don't think this board is reflective of that. I think this board has great taste in names!
It depends on what "real world" you inhabit. I feel like this board probably reflects naming trends across the country, especially when I see posts about what kids in their local preschool classes are called or what names their friends on FB have given their kids.
I don't think it reflects the names I find popular/used in my area, but I feel like I live in a pretty particular area- lots of international folks and lots of urban hipsters surround me and their name choices reflect this.
Honestly I don't have any opinions of the board in general. For the most part I agree with this board, but every once in awhile I hear something that surprises me. I work in early intervention-- so I have a pretty good idea of the latest names being used in our area (and also the reaction of the assessors/treatment providers of the name of the child.) Sometimes their reaction is the opposite of what the board would think! I guess that is where my question came from.
No. The general population doesn't give a rat's a** if your child's name is on the SSA list, or where it falls on the "too popular" line. I'd be surprised if most folks in the general population even knew that the SSA ~had~ a list of names by popularity.
No, honestly I think IRL people care less or at least think less about other people's names. I also think it depends where you live work. I work with kids in a district where the Nevaehs far outnumber the Fionas. Sometimes I see the crazy name posts and I think about some of the names I've come into contact with through my job. I've seen my share of kreative, but it is hard for me to think of them that way because once I know the kids, that's just them. Does that make sense?

Exactly. I was going to say, "clearly not, or else there wouldn't be as many -aydens, Nevaehs, and boy names on girls."

I tend to agree with most people on this board - we are name nerds.
Without sounding too jerky, and judging by how many crazy names there are out there, I think that the general population sees no problem with 6 Isabellas in one class, Nevaeh, or a girl named George.
Exchange George for "Spencer" or "Quinn," and I generally agree with this.

I think this board definitely reflects the population at large; most of the trends I see on here are trends I've also seen in real life--classic names, family names, made-up names, and surnames as first names, all combined with a lot of concern over popularity.

I agree. The name choices in the area where I live are somewhat different from most of what I see on this board.
First birth: Natural (med-free) Second birth: Hell, no. Epidural all the way.
