Postpartum Depression

Suprise BFP and Zoloft withdrawal

Hello all!

I have been on Zoloft since 1/10, for PPD and PPOCD. Zoloft, along with counseling, has helped me tremendously. However, on my birthday I got a suprise BFP. I immediately stopped taking the Zoloft. It has now been 1 week and I can not figure out if this is normal morning sickness or withdrawal symptoms....either way, it is pure hell.

I am dizzy, 24/7, tired all day, and am getting those "electric shock" -feelings.  I know I should have tapered off, but I panicked.

Has anyone experienced the withdrawal symptoms? How long will this continue and any tips to help alleviate?

This board has been so helpful....this is where I turned when I thought I had PPD...It was so reassuring to see I was not alone and there was a light at the end of the tunnel.

Thanks in advance!

  • I had some similar symptoms when I stopped my meds. I remember my sister talking to me, preparing me for the withdrawal.  She took me to get massages, and it really helped.

  • I too, have had moments where I have just stopped taking my meds and should have tapered off. I think it could be some withdrawl symptoms, but for some reason I'm thinking most likely morning sickness. Whenever I had just stopped taking them I only felt a little sick (upset stomach, headache) for about 3-4 days.

If you do decide that you want to stay on your zoloft through out your pregnancy that should be ok with most doctors. Please don't think that you have to stop taking the zoloft.

Oh and Congrats on your BFP!!! YAY!

  • I took Zoloft throughout the second half of my pregnancy. I had stopped my other meds when I got a BFP because they are definitely not safe for pregnancy. Zoloft is.  Have you considered staying on it?

  • I am on Zoloft now but I have see these commercials saying that if you took Zoloft before or during pregnancy that your baby might get heart defects/problems.  I am nervous for the next one that this will happen.  I plan to be off Zoloft well before I get pregnant again...but you never know when a BFP will come along!  Has anyone heard about heart problems with LOs and moms taking Zoloft before pregnancy?

  • I have been taking Zoloft on and off since 2006. The electric shock feelings are definetly Zoloft withdrawl. I made the mistake once of quiting cold turkey and I had those feelings a couple weeks before they went away. You need to taper off your medications before quitting cold turkey. I took zoloft throughout my entire pregnancy and my son is healthy. This is a conversation that you need to have with your doctor. There are risks and benefits to taking any medications. For me, I wanted to make sure that I was healthy physically and mentally durning my pregnancy. Being dizzy, tired all day and getting electric shocks probably isn't good for the baby either.
