ERGO without the insert

I have an 11 pound 4 week old and am getting all into babywearing (sling, wrap and ergo). DS hates the newborn  insert to the ergo but seems to do just fine without it - I keep him in the froggy position, in a very tight ergo - so he seems to be positioned just as he is in a wrap. ls anyone else considering using Ergo without the insert? I don't want to be unsafe...

Re: ERGO without the insert

  • It's not a question of weight, it's about whether your LO can hold his own head up or not. I used the infant insert until DD had good head control. This comes at different ages for different babies, maybe yours is there already at 4 weeks.

  • I know people who just put the pillow from the insert or a rolled up receiving blanket underneath their LOs instead of using the insert, but they were older babies, like 2-3 months old. I'd probably just stick to the wrap and sling right now if I were you.

  • I actually had the same question and have been trying to play with different options. My 5 week old is 12 lbs and hates the infant insert (we also live in the houston area where it is just too dang hot). I haven't yet found the best option. But in the mean time he is loving his ring sling (we have a Hava)

  • The insert was uncomfortable b/c of how hot it's been, but even when not super hot it still seems so cumbersome and huge.  I initially put my son in it without anything, just frogged his legs and tightened the hip belt really really tight and he did okay but after a pretty short while, he would slip down and be SO tightly frog-legged and so deep inside the pocket that I felt uncomfortable.  Now, he's 6 weeks old and has pretty good head control, so I use a rolled up blanket as a seat for him, like the insert "seat,' and then I just keep an eye/hand on his head...most of the time he falls asleep quickly in it, and I can use a shoulder strap to help keep his head against my chest.  So yeah, I've gone through all three iterations - insert, nothing, rolled blanket.  The blanket is by far the most comfortable for both of us - my favorite arrangement by far.  GL :)
