anyone experienced this?

my DS will be 1 in a couple weeks and I am having some major concerns about his development.  Let me start off by saying that I know every child is different and they all hit their milestones at their own pace but the longer this goes on the more concerned I get. I figure you ladies probably know the most about symptoms and thought maybe someone could tell me if I am right to be concerned or if I should just wait it out.

DS has always hit his milestones late and still doesn't do a lot of the things he 'should' be doing.  He wouldn't sit unassisted until 7 months and still will not put himself into a sitting position.  He will only army crawl and didn't start until about 9 months (he has recently started rocking back onto his knees but will immediately fall down).  He won't feed himself with the pincher grasp and he doesn't try to pull himself up, infact, he hardly has any interest in standing up with help and he keeps his legs stiff when you try to hold him up and make him "walk".

The other thing that worrys me is his speech, he will babble mama and dada but he wont say it to us or call to us, he doesn't want to wave bye either.  He claps, signs for more and does "so big" but doesn't seem interested in much else. His birthday party is in 2 weeks and he seems more like a 6mo old to me then a 1 yr old.

His well check is coming up on the 20th so I'll ask him about this.  Does it seem like anything you've encountered?  Low tone maybe? Developmental delays?  I'm not sure what to think about it.

Re: anyone experienced this?

  • It is true that all babies develop differently, and what you are describing isn't entirely out of the realm of normal. It is possible that he has lower tone in the trunk. My ds has upper body hypotonia, and he is just now holding a prop sit for a few minutes and is also trying to army crawl but cannot hold his trunk up well for a full crawl or balanced sitting. He also stiffens his legs a lot when we walk him, and this is because he is trying to overcompensate for the low tone in his upper body. Still, it sounds like you are seeing a ton of progress which is the most important thing. I think it is worth bringing up your concerns. You can always get an assessment done to be sure.

  • Thanks, I noticed a post you had a few back about some things you do with your ds to help him strenghten his torso.  Maybe I will try a few of those things and see if I notice any change before his appointment and then let the pedi see what he thinks.  My ds also has a really large head (nothing dangerous, just a family trait) which I always attributed to his delay in sitting, crawling. But now the problems seem to not be holding his head up, more with him using his stomach.  We will see.  Thanks again!

  • My DS hit all of his milestones late as well, almost at the same time as your DS. He also didn't start walking until 14 months and even now at 17 months, falls a lot and seems to not have much balance. He does not talk aside from a little babble and has no words at all. He was evaluated two weeks ago by our infant and toddler program and qualified for therapy. We have an appt. this week for his assessment of Autism. Now of course, what your DS is doing could be completely normal for him. I would bring it up at his 12 month appt, but you probably won't no anything more until you give him more time to develop. The concerns for me really started coming at 15 months.

  • My son was diagnosed with DiGeorge when he was three weeks old and we had lots of help through the process.

We had him in physical therapy since he seem to have issues with lifting his trunk and putting pressure on his legs.  He was diagnosed with low tone and started to walk at 19 months old.

His speech is delayed and has been in speech therpay now for a few months.  His therpaist said his at a 20 month level and his 2 1/2 years old.

I would talk with the doctor and voice your concerns.  The earlier you get help the better.  Our son has no sign of delay now with his walking, jumping, and running.  But he is delayed with speech and its a work in progress.
