pulling on ear=ear infection?

ds is insanely fussy tonight but it doesnt seem to be a reflux issue tonight (shocking!).  He will NOT lay down in his bed. Every time we put him down he wakes up crying 2 minutes later. He has pulled on his ear a bit but he doesnt pull it and cry or anything. He is extremely congested, stuffy/running nose and coughing.

No fever. Do they just play with their ears sometimes?

Re: pulling on ear=ear infection?

  • Aww, poor guy!
When Abigail had an ear infection, she was also pretty congested. He little eyes were even runny!
Doctor said that the ear infection was possibly caused by the congestion. It got clogged and infected, she said.
In addition to antibiotics, we bought some saline nasal spray. She hated it, but it worked!
For your little guy's sake, I hope it isn't an infection, though it doesn't sound like it if he really isn't just ripping at his ear... But obviously I'm not a doctor :)
Hope he can get some sleep tonight.

  • I'm sorry your son isn't feeling good. It's possible that when he's laying down it makes his congestion worse. I know it's happened to me when I'm sick. Maybe try laying him on an incline or in a rnp if u have one. I hope he feels better soon and they figure out his reflux problem too. Sorry for lack of formatting. My iPhone sucks at that.

  • My son does that a lot when he's teething. Given his other symptoms, I would take him to the pedi in the morning.

  • It doesn't always indicate an ear infection, but I think in your case, I would go to the pedi.  I took DS last week b/c I thought he had an ear infection because he kept pulling on it and wouldn't lay down.  He told me unless he had any sort of cold symptoms it wasn't an ear infection 9x out of 10.

This is good advice. Also, try propping the crib or putting him in a RNP while the cold is still there. It helps with drainage.

  • I just took DD in because she has been running a low grade fever only in the evenings. She was happy and chasing the dog wouldn't even know. Just took her temp one night because she wanted to play with the thermometer. Turns out she has an ear infection. I would go in.

  • Every time my oldest had those symptoms, he had an ear infection. Our pedi basically said with a ton of congestion and an ear infection, it hurt to lie down flat bc it put so much pressure on the ears etc. He would even scream when I put him on his back to change his diaper. Anyway, I'd just go ahead and take him in. My oldest rarely had a temp with ear infections. Hope he feels better soon!
  • Aaron does it when he is getting a tooth. I have taken him to the pedi a few times because I was convinced it was as ear infection and his ears looked fine.

  • I took Asher in this week b/c I thought it was an ear infection, too, but he just had some built up wax and it was bothering him. We put 2 drops of peroxide (diluted) in that ear, and it has helped! Hope you can figure out what's wrong with the little guy!

  • My lo was pulling on his ears & I thought it was an ear infection but nope. I then saw that he was getting his top teeth! Yes my little 6m boy is getting his 3 &4th teeth!

    Someone please hold me!

  • I just went to the pedi for this same thing, apparently its due to the teething also when they drink thier bottle they are getting lots of pressure which gets directed to the ear.
