October 2011 Moms

I Just Need to Cry Today

So this morning my entire office was advised that we are being let go.  Most of the staff will stay on until 12/31 when the office is officially closed.

I've been with this company 11 years, and I am 11 days from leaving on maternity and I've just lost my job - I am a complete WRECK!!!!

I have NO idea what I am going to do about going back to work once the LO is here - how does an expectant mom interview?  how does a FTM who's learning to be a mom manage to squeeze in interviews and resume writing???

I can't stop crying and almost don't want to do the next 11 days - would rather they just let me stay home and start my leave early at this point what difference does it make???

  • I am so sorry. I know it is rough, but you can handle this. Here are a few things to think about

    1. Do you have insurance? If not, you should see if you can qualify of medicaid for LO. I know that you can be on it while pregnant, but I assume there isn't much time left for that.

    2. Apply for unemployment ASAP. If you need the money you should apply for other government programs as well, don't be ashamed WIC is a good one.

    3. Start evaluating your budget. If you need help the girls on the money matters board are fantastic. But they will be very upfront and frank with you, which some people don't like to hear.

    4. I know it seems rough, but you can write resumes and interview. You are strong and amazing. Mom's (and women) can do anything they set their mind to.

    Good luck

What amazing advice.. you are really a great person to be able to give out all that information to someone who is in a tough spot :-)

DH and I moved from MA to FL because he got a new job. I actually quit my job to move down here with him.. and not even 3 months into it, he got laid off.. it's been really tough, especially since we zero family down here.. but we have each other and we know that we can get through this.

There is nothing to be ashamed about in applying for Medicaid, Unemployment, and WIC... especially in your situation.. you do what you need to do to make ends meet..

My advice, from someone who has been there (and is STILL there now) .. is to take it day by day.. make a list of priorities that you need to get done asap (like insurance).. and if friends/family are willing to help out, don't be ashamed to ask for support.

You can get through this .. keep your head up and you will eventually see a light at the end of the tunnel.. We are still searching for that light but we have faith hope and love and right now that is enough :-) (Well.. medicaid helps lol)

  • So sorry you're going through this.  In addition to the great advice above, I would also look into making sure you still receive your maternity leave benefits (if you were receiving any to begin with, such as continued healthcare coverage or any amount of paid leave).

In regard to really evaluating your budget to find ways to cut costs and save money, I strongly recommend www.mint.com -- it's a great resource to keep track of bills, set budgets and stick to them, create savings goals, and find ways to cut spending.  It also alerts you to areas you might be overspending and helps suggest ways to cut back.

  • I am so sorry! That is such devastating news to get at any time, especially so close to your due date! Sending lots of thoughts and prayers your way....hugs!

  • I agree that you should work on your resume now (before delivery) and then it is ready.

When your LO is getting a bit bigger, then you can start sending them out.

who knows? you might get a better job with better pay or better hours in the end. However, I can imagine the anxiety.

  • I am so sorry this happened...Yes, if you could try to start working on your resume now and it'll be done and ready ! I've been laid off twice in my life (of course, I was not laid off while I was pregnant or with a newborn. I was laid off and our daughter was 2 years old at the time. Please be calm, review your budget, pool your resources and get that resume cranked out. Reach out to great reference people now, let them know that you may need them to be great references for you. You will be ok!! you will...
