Update on my 2yr old cousin...

My cousin just posted this on facebook:

"preliminary prognosis is "histiocytosis" (1 in 200,000 kids get this a year) And has another surgery tomorrow (being planned now). Then treatments next week. Will post more when we know more"

We're thankful it wasn't some kind of cancer, at least.

Anybody heard of this condition before? I'm not familiar with it.

  • I am pretty sure it is some type of autoimmune disorder.  You could probably google it and find lots of info though.  T & P for you and your family.

  • Its a rare blood disease, my friends nephew has it. It does show similar signs of cancer as far as elevated white blood count or depleted blood cell count, but doesnt really respond to chemo or radiation as cancer would. Unfortunately there is currently no cure for it. Heres a few links about it, including Haydens family journal about his illness and treatments, your cousin may want to check it out.

  • I know of one child with histiocytosis. He is 3 years old and is currently doing well. He was diagnosed at birth and spent time in and out of the hospital. As jesnuts mentioned, I believe it does have some characteristics of cancer and is a blood disease. The little guy I know has been treated with chemotherapy as well as other drugs. I don't know much about it though:( I know my friend had mentioned the possibility of her child having a marrow transplant in the future.) T&Ps for your little cousin and family!
