Toddler Bed?

We switched DD from her crib to her converted bed many many months ago.  Im expecting #2 in February and we'd like to move her to a regular/toddler bed.  Does she have to have sides on the bed?  We were looking at beds that are not close to the ground/floor and regular height.  Thoughts?

    DS sleeps in a toddler bed but on vaca or a special treat he will sleep in our bed.  I don't use rails - if it is a tile floor I toss a pillow down.  He has only fallen out of his toodler bed once - and I'm not sure if he fell out or decided to sleep on the floor - he didn't wake and was just sleeping on the floor when I found him.
