What should I ask about?

I'm going to the birthing/newborn class and a breastfeeding class my hospital provides next week. I figure they will go over some of the hospital's procedures and practices. I'm trying to make a list of what to ask about. I know I want to ask about what I can eat while in labor...(I love to eat! Please don't take that away from me!). I'm also going to ask what things the hospital provides so I can make better decisions on what to pack.

What else can you think of?

  • My guess is they'll answer a bunch of questions you didn't even know you had in their normal material (at least it was the case in my situation).  I've heard from a lot of women who love to eat that when in labor that was the last thing on their mind.  Most places will only let you have things like popsicles and ice chips in case you need to go in for an emergency c-section.

  • What I've learned from my tours and my classes is to ask their policies on anything that concerns you. If you are looking for med-free (or at least epi free) ask them their alternatives to heavy medications like epidurals and pitocin. I also like to know if they let you move around as much as you want; if they have a hydrotherapy tub, birthing balls etc, if whether you can bring you own. Eating is a big thing most places don't let you do while in labor since some medications can make you feel sick and if you need a c/s they don't want you having a neg effect from anesthesia. Most places allow clear liquids like water, tea, ice pops, apple juice, etc. during labor. i have also asked about their acceptance of birthing plans, if they have a good list of things to bring to the hospital, and how many docs/nurses they have on staff. Other things that have concerned me are do they rest the baby on your belly after delivery and let you nurse right away and if you have the option to accept or deny the HepB shot. Also, if you are having a boy and getting him circumcised I would inquire about whether they use a topical anesthesia or not. Plus! If your SO is interested if they are able to cut the cord and watch the first bath of your baby.
