Parenting after a Loss

Decrease in formula/BM intake

When do your LO start to reduce the volume of liquid calories in favor of solids?

We've been doing solids for 3 months now and she generally still eats 24-30 oz a day even after we upped her solids to 3 meals a day.

At some point did LO self regulate and take fewer liquid calories or did you have to stop offering as much as you increased solids?

Her solids portions seem pretty large to me as well. Today for breakfast (about 2 hours after a 5 oz bottle) she ate: 1 whole scrambled egg, 1/3 of a yo-baby yogurt, 1/2 a cup applesauce, several strawberries, and a few Cheerios. She followed that up an hour later with another 5 oz bottle.

That's way more than I eat for breakfast and lunch combined if you count the calories from the formula! And she hasn't even had lunch yet.

Re: Decrease in formula/BM intake

  • My pedi said not to decrease the intake of formula/bm until a year. We're not doing a lot of solids right now. He eats 3 jars of purees plus 30 oz of BM/formula.

  • You also aren't growing!!

I have no idea how many ounces Ro takes, but she eats solids like a fiend. I let her self regulate. I think it is very important that she be allowed to take the lead. As long as your LO is growing normally, let her decide when she's hungry and when she is not.

  • They mostly get all their calories from Formula/BM the first year of life. Then from whole milk after their first birthday until around 18 months is how my ped explains it. Solids are extra and with all the growing both mentally and physically they so this is fine.

Or they can continue with BM.

Sorry. I was referring to your general comment which is incorrect for a breastfed baby. A formula fed baby does have different nutritional needs.

And sorry, Sonadora, for getting off topic.

  • After our appt today the pedi said that DD would start to decrease her forumla amount as she starts to eat more solids.  We're now working to get her up to 3 meals and 2 snacks a day with bottles in between but she'll start taking less from the bottles.

  • Some days I feel that all I do is feed DS! He is nursed about 4 times a day and has 3 solid meals a day.

    Something like this:

    7am - nurse

8:30-9 - breakfast (about 4 oz of applesauce, oatmeal, and pancake, toast, or egg)

    11 - nurse

12:30-1 - lunch (recently it's been sweet potato, pasta, cheese, beans)

    3 - nurse

5:30 - dinner (small bits of what we're having, sweet potato, cheese, yogurt)

    7 - nurse

Oh, Baby Bean! We will always miss you! With us for 6w3d -- June 9, 2008.

  • I will let you know when that day comes haha.  I feel like maybe recently he's been shortening his nursing sessions, but he still takes the same amount of expressed breastmilk at daycare.  The solid meals/snacks just got added to the liquid intake so far.  Piggy pig pig.

  • We started decreasing when DS started eating 3 meals.  He's down to 4 bottles a day for a total of 28 oz of formula.  I usually give DS a variety of solids at a meal and keep at it until he starts to lose interest.

Sounds like B has a hearty appetite!  Good for her!
