Wanting parents to sleep in his room?

DS was sick this weekend (threw up, then ran a fever).  We made the mistake of letting him sleep in our bed with Daddy.

Now, DS wakes up each night and wants one of us to go sleep with him in his room (he knows he can't sleep with us).  He says he's scared to be in his room by himself....  How do we break him of this?  We're dying from lack of sleep!

Re: Wanting parents to sleep in his room?

  • Just be firm and say no.  He'll get through it, but it'll take longer if you're wishy-washy about it.  DD will ask us to lay down with her when we tuck her and and I say "ok for 2 minutes."  Then I set a timer which beeps and then I say goodnight and leave the room.  She's stubborn, stubborn, stubborn and if we waver on anything she picks up on it and it becomes a fight.  If we're firm and consistent she knows to not even try.

  • Exact same thing happen to us this summer DS was sick and of course I put him in bed with us - just one night buy boy it was hard to kick. Just stick to your guns -nicely and never change or it will start over.  As pp said if you do lay down for a minute use a timer or I sing him two songs then get up.  Make sure it is a set time limit LO is aware of.

  • We just had a similar issue.  We shortenend the time we stayed in his room by a few minutes each night and then switched to just laying in bed to read one book and then we leave. He knows that we will come and check on him in a bit.

We also let him sleep with a helicopter flashlight in his bed ;-)
