Cruel...A question..

I love your tactful way of putting things so maybe you can help here.

We have a coffee pot that about 80% of the office gets coffee from. Most of that 80% bring coffee, filters, creamer, sugar for the coffee drinkers to use in lieu of giving money.

Our issue is that 20% that continue to get coffee and never contribute. My secretary made a "Coffee Drinkers" log and listed names of people she sees getting coffee so we all contribute supplies. Those that refuse to contribute crossed their names off the list but still get coffee.

Suggestions on fixing this? I think if I post a note there it might read "Hey, we know you're over here getting coffee and you never chip in. Start bringing supplies or start using your own pot."

Re: Cruel...A question..

  • I know you're not asking me personally, but wouldn't it just be easier to just put a sign that says "Coffee is ___ cents per cup" and leave it at that? One person can then take the money to get supplies, and everyone can be happy.

We used to but no one contributed. I would buy the creamer and sugar, my boss would get filters and coffee. Or it would be a handful of us that bought the stuff we used but then others would come and get coffee but NEVER chip in.

So then I sent an email to those that drink coffee to help out and bring supplies, we all use it, etc. The same ones that chip in did but the ones that don't chip in would still come get coffee.

You don't want to come across as nitpicky in the office but it's getting old.

  • Is there anyway to move the coffee to an area that can be monitored?  I know it sounds childish, but if someone could see the people still getting coffee I would immediately say "so what can I put you down for brining in for the coffee?"  And if they say nothing then simply say well then please stop drinking the coffee.  People pay for it and help with it, and it's asked you either help with supplies or not drink any, and if someone continues to drink it without contributing knowing they need to realize it's a form of theft.

That's a good idea. I can send an email to them and ask what they are going to bring to help out and I can base that response on their reply. I just think it's childish to think it's even come to this.

  • Put up a sign that says "We know who is TAKING  coffee from those of us who pay for it.  YOU should be ASHAMED for stealing from your co-workers"

Is the same place that has a woman who steals wedding cake because she has kids to feed?

  • get a keurig and BYO Kcups. Or keep the coffeemaker at someones desk so it can be monitored (not sure if your workplace has desks or a place that would work?)

YES! Same place! Friggin cake thief. Yep. I thought about posting a sign "You are aware the police work here. It goes like this: Go-juice = Big Smile Cops. Stolen go-juice =Angry Cops. Upset cops tend to play pranks and we play them well. You've been warned, so bring coffee supplies if you're taking from our stash."

Also, I forgot. I think monitoring the people who are taking but not contributing, as well as putting up silly signs is about as stupid as the people taking without giving. If you are going to have an office coffee pot, you need to go into it understanding that you cannot control everyone and that there is always going to be someone taking coffee but giving nothing. Either take it away entirely or leave it there with that understanding.

I was truly hoping for a smartass Cruelism.

Tell them they are a bunch of buffalo turds and, if they had any bit of decency at all, they would stop flashing their nuts for free coffee and pony up to the trough and slap down some cold, hard cash.

    That's the Cruel we LOVE!!
