Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Freakin Refulx!! Just go away already.

So I took Aj to the doc yesterday for an appt. I felt he needed to be seen. He has reflux pretty bad and milk protein senstivity. He's on Alimentum and 7.5 mg Prevacid twice a day. He had been back to spitting alot and over all just not "himself".

Well i'm glad I took him in. He has only gained 2oz in five weeks! :( The doc wants to try just giving him the full 15mg of Prevacid 1 time a day. Considering he doesn't really any issues through the night with reflux its usually through the day around 3 or 4 that he gets really crabby and starts spitting. She says if that doesn't do the trick we will add Zantac with the Prevacid.

Does anyone LO take both? How well does it work? Do I have any other options? I hate that he has to take any meds. Let alone that he may need to be on 2! I'm just tired of it. I want my Lil Guy to feel good all the time and not have to deal with all this crap anymore!

  • Oh man, I feel for you. DS is still struggling with his reflux issue and milk protein intolerance too. DS is on Prevacid twice a day too, but not as big of a dose. But I'm not actually seeing the results I would like to and I think the dose needs to be increased some.

I have question for you, how you you get your LO to take Prevacid? DS hates hates hates the taste. So we struggle to get him to take the full dose, which I think might be part of the reason its not working well.

  • I'm not sure if this helps, but my son had really bad problems with Reflux, and it was saddest thing ever.  Our doc put him on Losec twice per day at around six weeks.  It helped tremendously.  His symptoms disappeared.  If I happened to miss a dose, the symptoms reappeared with a vengeance.    I was actually at a party a few months ago, and there was a pediatrician there and, of course, like an ***, I had to mention my boy's plight with reflux.  The pedi told me not to worry, that he will outgrow it eventually.  When he turned five months a few weeks ago, I slowly started to ween him off the losec.  As of two days ago, I haven't given him any medication whatsoever and it seems as though the reflux is gone.  I'm crossing my fingers.  Anyway, I don't know much about medication, but this Losec seems to be the best thing that ever happened.....I can't wait to tell my doc at the six-month appointment.

Do you take the solutab? Or is it compounded? We are on the solutab. What I do is put the tab inside the dosing syringe then, draw the water into the syringe. So this way the tab actually disolves into the syringe so I know the whole dose is in there. Sometimes I have to draw up water a few time to make sure its all out. But, thats the best way i've found to give it. My insurance will not cover the compounded liquid. An what dose does your DS take?

And I asked the doc about switching to Prilosec but she seemed pretty firm that she wanted to try this route first. It annoys me because I myself am a nurse and I know these meds by heart being I deal mostly with the elderly and they all have GERD an I see these meds every day. But hey they are the doc right??

  • DD#1 had horrible reflux. When the prevacid didn't help get it under control, I asked our pedi for a referral to a pediatric GI specialist. He added a couple of other medications and one that was just for 10 days to "heal" the esophagus from the damage the reflux had already done. Fortunately, under his care, we were able to get it under control and she began gaining weight. However, we were not able to completely wean off all medication until around a year and a half.

DS takes 2.5ml of the compound twice a day. Its nasty. But hes only been on this for a week, so I'm hoping it gets better as time goes on.

DS was on 7 ml Prilosec before  the Prevacid. It worked great, but it was so horrible that DS would spit most of it out, and then throw up any of the medication we were actually able to get him to swallow. For awhile we were actually mixing adult Prilosec into his food, but we have since switched.
