April 2012 Moms

Baby names...William and Kate..

My husband is Scottish, (parents immigrated from scotland, he was born here) and so naturally wants a gaelic name for our children. It's been a delicate balancing act because I find a lot of gaelic names to be harsh and just not my type.  We finally settled that we both like Liam, and Kathleen...Oops... Its William and Kate.  Son of a gun...

While we both realize that we dont know if this is a boy or a girl, and there is no gaurentee that our NEXT child with be of the opposite sex, so we dont know if this will ever be an actual issue... however,

Would you be deterred from these names because ya know.. that silly little royal wedding? Considering his family DOES life in the UK, its kind of a big thing.

  • I don't think it's an issue if you're calling your children Liam and Kathleen.  If you call/name them William and Kate, then I think you'll get a lot of raised eyebrows.

  • April 2011 mom who lurks...

My son is named William and he was born a week before the Royal Wedding. And our favorite girl name was Catherine :) Both names were picked out long before the Royal couple got engaged! If you like the names, use them! In later years it is doubtful that anyone will make the connection.

Besides William is an awesome name and we plan on using the nickname Liam too!

See I thought the same thing- but apparently Liam really is a surname of William. Its like when people nickname Johnathan to Jack or John. :-

I know, but it's also a stand-alone name these days.  I see it much more often as a stand-alone name than as a nickname for William.

  • Yeah I wouldnt worry too much about that....if you like the names so what! I think they're nice names

  • I think Liam and Kate are fine together.

MH and I decided on Jacob for a boy, and then he suggested Isabella for a girl. I said, "no way, ho way in he11 are we having a Jacob and a Bella." Then, I had to reference Twilight and he got it.

Liam and Kate are okay, IMO...Jacob and Bella are not.

  • You can use one of those with this baby & then if you have another, you can rethink it. Maybe by the time you have another, you'll like another name. I wouldn't worry about it now.

  • I like both names. My mom's name is Kathleen :) But goes by Kathy, so beware that people will most likely call her that.

And those names aren't as bad as people naming their kids after celebs. My godson's name is Keanu.

    THIS.

And who's to say that by the time you have #2 you will even like those names anymore? You could have a daughter and name her Kate and in 2 years get KTFU again and decide Liam is not your stye anymore.

  • Individually they are fine, but if you were going to genuinely call them William and Kate I personally would avoid

  • My husband is also Scottish (his mother immigrated from Scotland also!), and my first choice for a boy's name is Liam, so of course I'm going to say go with it! ;)

I second this. But I guess I'm biased.

Also, I'm a 'just Kate'. Not shortened from anything.

  • You could also call her Kath or Kathy instead of Kate. By the time you have another baby, if it's the opposite sex you may have changed your mind anyway. My doctor named her twins Benjamin and Jennifer and that drives me nuts!

  • My cousin just had a baby in June and named her son Liam (after our late grandfather William). At first no one really liked it but then they realized it was sort of after our grandfather everyone thought it was cool.
