do your LOs wake up screaming?

This has really been bothering me. For the last month, DS been waking up each morning absolutely screaming his head off. There's no warning - he doesn't wake up and play/coo/talk for a while - it's awake --> inconsolable. Tears down his face, blood curdling screams.

When we walk in the room, it doesn't subside. He continues to scream until he's snuggled up on the couch with us, sipping on his milk. Even then, he's a crab - sometimes spitting out his milk and continuing to scream/kick/etc. It honesetly takes a full 10 minutes before he's fully awake and resembling his normal happy self.

Maybe this is normal, (?) but more often, I hear of kids waking up more like DD (happy and excited to see us). It's honestly such an exhausting and sh1tty way to start the day for all of us.

Anybody else have kids that wake up this way?

Re: do your LOs wake up screaming?

  • I've had this happen a few times with Zxavier I think...I'm not sure if it's because he's not "fully awake", but yet wants to get up?  It's very frustrating because for us we have a hard time to get him to settle down...sometimes I would try and comfort him and if he doesn't want me to take him I would just let him be for a little until he calms down...

I know Zxavier woke up a few times during the night this weekend gone by basically "freaking out" he wouldn't let me take him or nothing...it took a while to calm him down, I wonder if they have bad deams at this age? It's hard to know what goes on thru their little heads...it's awful to watch them like that....

  • It is probably normal but I would consider getting him checked out for an ear infection to make sure he isn't in pain.

  • This is DS1 almost every morning. I have to have milk, cereal, and Yo Gaba Gaba totally ready the night before. I have to sprint across the house to grab him before the screaming wakes DS2. You're right, a very shitty way to start your day.

  • I don't have my babies yet, but my mom just gave me the baby book she kept while she was pregnant with me and up until I was a year old. I did this. I was sick a lot when I was born (I was early - not crazy early, but early and had jaundice and double eye infections...then I got colic - I wasn't a great baby!) and after I got over all of that stuff and got into a routine it seems like I was waking up screaming. It didn't seem to last long, though, and getting milk seemed to help (this is according to a 30-year-old journal...so take with a grain of salt).

Someone's suggestion to check for an ear infection seems like a pretty good idea.

  • When my girls were right around your LOs age, my DD1 would wake up screaming occasionally. She still does every now and then, but it is mostly in the middle of the night. I think it is just nightmares, since she isn't fully awake when I go to get her. I feel terrible for her! DD2 doesn't do it.

I am sorry to hear your DS does that too. And yet, I'm so comforted by it. :) We have the same crutches: milk, cherrios, & yo gabba.

  • Jimmy wakes up screaming some mornings. I'm lucky though - it's not  all the time.

  • Z does the same thing.  He has NEVER woken up happy.  People talk of their kids happily playing in their cribs when they wake up.  Nope, not with Z.  Holding him does not stop the crying.  What has helped is having a sippy of milk ready and then we put a cut up banana in a bowl on the floor.  And yes, it is an exhausting way to start the day.
