Hello ladies My A/S didnt go as planned :(

Hello Ladies While I may not belong here right now I figured some of you ladies would have more expirence with this than the other boards. First off the good news is we are having a girl! Poor DH will be outnumbered 3 to 1. Bad news is that there is a mass where the cord meets the baby. They can't determine if its a tumor or a hernia of sorts. Because of this the baby is at greater odds of having a chromosomal issues so of course an Amnio is recommended. After some discussion we decided that we are going ahead with the amnio but no matter what keeping the baby. I'm a planner and I need to know what to expect as best I can.. Finally my question, did you have an amnio done? if you had an Amnio done do you think it was worth the diagnosis or would you rather have waited? If you didn't have one done, do you regret your decision? Thanks in advance ladies for your input.

  • We didn't have one and DS was born with a chromosomal disorder.  However, with how far into genetic testing we are nothing would have shown up on an amnio or CVS.

  • First off, congratulations on your little girl!!  And, if she's going to be raised as a Packer fan, she's going to be JUST FINE!! :)

I didn't have an amnio because there were none of the usual markers for DS1's birth defect.  We were wholly surprised at his birth to find his condition as less than perfect.  And, for me, I don't regret not having an amnio done.  I am also a planner, but I'm also a stresser/worrier.  So, not knowing until there was actually something that could be done about it was best for my situation.  My blood pressure would have been out of control for the remainder of my pregnancy and that would have been even worse for my son.  I think it all worked out the way it was supposed to, so I have never regretted it.  Only you and your DH can know which situation is best for you.  Obviously, since they've already detected something, you're already a step ahead of the game.  In your shoes, I think I would also proceed with an amnio.  Since the current diagnostics are not conclusive, I would want a full answer (or, as much of an answer as I could get while the baby is still en utero).

  • DS's NT screen came back 1 in 3 for a chromo or heart disorder.  I had the CVS, and additional testing as well.  He was born typical and I don't regret having the testing.  It would have been hell for me to live with that question for 6 months.  It was painless and required 48 hours of rest after, which I took seriously.  I had it done at a clinic that only does that.  I am a planner too.
  • Thank you ladies for your replies. I'm worried sick right now but praying that for the best. I keep trying to tell myself to relax but the risk of the unknown really sucks! Thanks again for sharing! PS I'm actually an Eagles fan but DH's entire family is die hard packers fans so sometimes I let them win!

  • I skipped the NT and anything else they do early on (I honestly don't even know what they do!) because I'm 25 and I knew my risk was super low.

Well, at our anatomy scan on Monday the doctors told us she had several markers for Trisomy 21 (Down syndrome). We actually decided to do the amnio because we wanted to avoid the fear of the unknown.

The amnio was actually not a big deal, it didn't even really hurt, it was just weird feeling. We decided to do it because the risk of m/c was very low and we were at the very best hospital in our area.

We got confirmation that our daughter does have Down syndrome. We feel so relieved know for sure! We're extremely happy we found out when we did. And now that we know for sure, we almost feel like we have 'permission' to just be excited again. We know we have a lot to learn and be prepared for in the next 5 months until she gets here and we're glad we have that time. (Although we also just want it to hurry up and be February so we can meet our baby!)

    (((hugs)))
