My cousin was pregnant when the Caylee Anthony story first broke. Simultaneously, there was another horrible story of a baby death. That baby's name was also Caylee (unsure of how it was spelled). Before that, the name Caylee was hardly heard of. Guess what my cousin named her unborn baby?
Yep. I love her daughter, but I'll never get over that.
Ew.

Re: Tacky, tacky
Let me also add that I don't dislike the name Caylee (or even Casey).
I, like everyone else, felt so awful when the story broke, and upon release of all the media coverage of the baby's death, my cousin announces she's naming her baby Caylee. I think the timing just hit me like a ton of bricks.
yeah her timing could have been better.... but I agree with PP...at least it wasn't Casey!

My piano teacher growing up was Kailey, pronounced the same way. I would assume she's in her mid-30s now (she was in high school when she was my teacher, she was an amazing player!). So it's definitely not a new name but is much more popular these days along with the similar Kylee/Kiley.
FWIW, I prefer the Kailey spelling (probably b/c that was my first association with the name).

Kaylee is actually a really popular name and it has been for quite a while... much longer than this Caylee Anthony stuff. My cousin, who's in her twenties is named Kaylee, I babysat a girl named Kaylie growing up, and every other kid my friends had were named Kaylee for about three years at the beginning of my twenties.
This isn't a case of bad tact. It's a case of people using a popular name. It's like getting miffed that someone named their child Ava or Madison. It's just too common to get up in arms about.

Yep. I know more Caylee/Kaylees over the age of 13 than I do little ones. This is not a new name.

Ummm...it's not exactly the same as using the name Jonbenet (Ramsey). It's a lot more common. I've even considered it briefly, but I know that several close members of our family followed the case the whole time and would mentally have that comparison in their minds. My SIL is a social worker, so she was very moved by the whole thing. If it wasn't for that, it'd still be on my list.
People get way too up in arms about this stuff. I was criticized for considering the name Katrina. Honestly, considering the name appealed to me from a book I'd just finished, my instant connection to the name wasn't the hurricane, so I didn't even think about. DH vetoed it for other reasons, so I guess it's not an issue now.
