Appt Update Choroid Plexus Cysts

So I went to my regular prenatal appointment, and the doctor asked me if we had gone over the results of my ultrasound.  I told her that we hadn't.  I had my ultrasound three weeks ago, but had not seen or talked to my doctor yet.  She goes on to say that the results from my ultrasound were mainly normally.  And I questioned what do you mean by mainly.  She informed me that the tech found a Choroid Plexus Cyst and that although they are fairly normal, many children with Downs Syndrome have them.  So I started to panic.  She then informed me that it is most likely nothing, but that it does double my chances of having a child with Downs Syndrome (from 1:1250 to 1:625).  I was just wondering if anyone else found a cyst at the ultrasound or knows someone who has.

  • My baby also had those which freaked me out. But once I told the u/s doc that I had good NT Scan results he said he wasn't worried and didn't recommend the amnio. He brushed it off fairly quickly. The next day I saw my OB and she said the same thing, that the amnio was not recommended but that it was my choice if I wanted to find out. (I declined). Both docs said it was sometimes a marker for Trismoy 18, but also found in normal babies too. My baby had no other markers so they said it's highly unlikely he had anything wrong with him. My OB said the cysts often just go away as time goes on. The word cysts is a very scary word - esp on the brain, but my OB calmed me down and explained it all out for me. Of course it's a scary thing but sounds like it's also pretty normal, Though sometimes I still think about it and wish he didn't have them, for the most part I am confident my baby is healthy :) Everyone wants to hear "they're perfect!" ... Good luck with everything, but I have confidence everything will work out! Hang in there - I know exactly how you feel!

  • My baby also has CPC. I definitely did my share of freaking out at first, but after my Level II u/s where no other soft-markers where found, I feel so much better. Especially, with it being such a common issue.

  • My baby has a CPC as well as another soft marker for Downs- an echogenic focus in his heart. I went through all the emotions, like the other ladies said. But I had a Level II ultrasound 2 weeks later, and the cyst was gone. The echogenic focus was still there but with no other soft or hard markers for Downs, my odds are about 1:1000. They offered to give me an amnio but I opted out. We feel very confident he will be healthy.

Good luck to you and I promise, with time and more knowledge the news won't be as scary. It's becoming more and more common (with the technology getting better).
